If you want to share a neat FREEWARE program,
why not upload it to alt.binaries.freeware for all to use?

Because Dick Hazeleger & Boomer troll that newsgroup like net nazis. If
they don't agree with your definition of freeware they report you to your
ISP. I'm not talking about warez or anything illegal. I'm talking about
FREEWARE programs.

one reason could be that most ISPs (here in Germany for example)
generelly dont offer any binaries NGs.

Boomer's been changing the email address in his/her/its newsreader about
once a week too. Been kinda hard to keep in the bozo bin.

I noticed that, too. Quite annoying. :)

Changing that all the time sounds like something a troll would do. Which
should not be that surprising since she thinks she is the matriarch of
the newsgroups she visits. The day she is gone is the day I will do the
happy dance.

I'll give Boomer one thing--she's consistent. Ask a question in any
newsgroup where she's active and you'll get one of two answers from her: a
list of other newsgroups in which to post your question, or "Did you search
on Google?"

You guys are kidding, right? I mean, even though your are both using
OE it should be dead simple to filter out her posts. Even if she
decides to use a different e-mail address for each and every post, the
"Boomer" part never changes.

Consistently anoying in some areas. Sure the list of other newsgroups is
helpful sometimes, but most of the time someone will actually answer the
questions with useful information. It's also annoying to assume that
everyone's ISP carries the same newsgroups. The whole "Did you search on
Google?" question is useless. A search engine is only useful if you know
what you are looking for. You can't search for a wysiwyg html editor if
you don't know what it's called. Sure you could plug HTMl editor into
Google and wade through the 7,590,000 hits you come up with. It's faster
to ask in a newsgroup where you can get feedback, suggestions,
experiences that will help you narrow your search. Look at FAQ's, in most
of them the first question is "What's a FAQ?" Why?, because people new to
newsgroups don't know the term FAQ.

Other reasons would be that directing people to a URL is better. Also,
some freeware authors don't want to distribute/will not allow
distribution from anywhere other than their own site.

I can't find (e-mail address removed) posting very much on usenet.
User name change maybe?

Another is that the newsfeed from ABF seems to be rather flakey (at
least in my end of the world). I get to see the spam, but rarely the
posts of any value. It's not just my ISP either - it appears to be an
upstream problem from a "significant" node.

You're correct, it is simple to set filters in OE.
Usually, the email address is enough to use when I filter; I
just click on 'Block Sender' and the address is added to my
'Blocked Sender' list. If the address changes a few times,
no big deal, I add them to the list.
I see a 'Boomer_Baby' address in my 'Blocked Sender' list
eight times. That's annoying.
I don't block nyms. It's conceivable someone else might use
it.

So long, Q. :)

And if nobody does so, there is at least a hint to a place where you
could ask instead. I have to agree that Boomer does this in a way that
is not very nice, but I cannot see anything wrong with the idea of
pointing people to other groups that are closer to the topic.

Or you could search in Google Groups: search only "alt.comp.freeware"
for "wysiwyg html editor" - you would get a usable ammount of hits.

Well, give them a link to the FAQ, the first paragraph is always:
What is a FAQ. Once they read it, they know what it is.

For someone who is not giving his/her/its real name and not showing a
working e-mail adress either, you are bashing quite hard on people who
do the same as you do.

You just made "Godwin's Law" come true!

Show me one case where anybody reported anyone to its ISP for making a
mistake once. Oh well, or better let it be, I won't read it anyway:

Not very nice? She usually lists a couple or more groups where OP may
get some/better/more help, and sometime says something like "You might
want to try here..."

Even when she doesn't state the obvious (why would she post three
groups' names, if not suggesting OP check with them?), there's nothing
"not very nice" about just showing the relevant groups.

What you seem to be implying is that unless someone gets all flowery,
it's rude to post a link. If someone says "where can I find
Program X?", and I just respond...

http://www.programx.com

....then you're saying I'm being rude.

I'm not. And Boomer's not. Jeez! Sometimes we chat; sometimes we just
provide what's asked for. The latter isn't rude. If it is, then the
act of *not answering* every post - the ultimate not-chattting - is
the rudest possible thing one can do. :)

I already knew that Germany sucks except Octoberfest and cars, but
that's all time low if you have majority of ISP's that don't offer
full newsfeeds. Here in Finland competition of ISP's is very hard,
many different companies have very low prices for DSL-connections.
People can only compare ISP's from their level of service, one of
them is providing good Usenet News feed and storing newsgroups for
a long time.

(These were only my personal opinions)

=======================================

What good would that do them? Freeware is freeware regardless of
what they think, so why would my ISP have any interest when there
is no wrong being done?

Well, DeeDee... are you one of those that use ABF to drop COPYRIGHTED
SOFTWARE then? Then YOU are a THIEF and an ABUSER of that newsgroup...
that is what Boomer and myself try to prevent... so that it will stay
available on many servers...

Perhaps we should let you go along, then soon Usent will consist only
of a few newsgroups on the servers. BTW: Spoiled brat: I resist using
the word "Nazi" in referral to Boomer and myself, you even don't know
what the Nazis did to Europe, go and play outside, or harass your
parents, together with those script kiddy friends of you!

You wrote: "I'm not talking about warez or anything illegal. I'm
talking about FREEWARE programs."; then please tell us in which case
of uploaded FREEWARE we did file abuse reports? The Photoshop manual?
That is copyrighted and not freeware, DeeDee.

I hope you will read this, and will have the guts to reply...

Dick
