I think everybody will/should slowly move to foobar2000 (the best MP3 player,
IMHO).

I agree. Foobar 2000 is, IMO, the best freeware audio player & just
like Winamp, Foobar 2000 can be extended by creating plug-ins for
Foobar. Also, the Foobar 2000 SDK is freeware & can be download from
the same place as Foobar 2000 & both of these progs can be downloaded
from http://www.foobar2000.org/download.html . These are 3 versions of
Foobar, the lite version, normal version & special version. I
recommend that people download the special version of Foobar 2000
because it contains the most plugins. You can also find Foobar plugins
at http://gelaed.com/resources/plugins.html ,
http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/foobar/ ,
http://pelit.koillismaa.fi/plugins/ & many other sites. You can also
find updates (links to the homepages) for the Foobar plugins which
play chiptunes at http://www.vorc.org/en/main.shtml .

Does it play flac,rm, shn, and mp4? Winamp is the only program I know
of so far that has plug ins for most formats. QCD comes close but
doesn't have shn.

MP4 playing capability is included in all downloads of Foobar 2000.
Flac & MP4 are avaliable in the normal & special editions of Foobar
2000 which can be downloaded from
http://www.foobar2000.org/download.html . The special edition of
Foobar contains the plugin to play Shorten (shn) files (if it doesn't
have the Shorten plugin, it can be downloaded from
http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~uybc/#foo_shn ). This is no plugin
(not yet) to play RM files but you can download a plugin which enables
you to use Winamp Input Plugins, this prog is called Wrapper for
Winamp input plugin & it can be download along with other Foobar
plugins at http://www.vesta.dti.ne.jp/~tsato/soft_fb2k_en.html .
There's also a plugin called Wrapper for KbMedia Player which enables
you to use KbMedia Player plugins in Foobar which can be downloaded
from http://www.vesta.dti.ne.jp/~tsato/soft_fb2k_test.html (the
plugins on this page are test plugins so these are not offical yet).

Why do you assume you have to replace Winamp because development has
stopped? It works well and will continue to for years to come. I use 2.95,
which is several years old. I can also assure you that people will continue
to write plugins for it as new types of media come out.

Well, since development has stopped, it means no new features will be
coming out but these features can still be done thru plugins but since
development has stopped, it also means that there might not be an
fixes to bugs which might appear in the future & if Winamp refuses to
run on your system, your kind of screwed.

BTW: I gave up Winamp months ago for Foobar 2000 so I gave up Winamp
long before this new development happened.

When I tried Foobar2000 a while back, it had no volume bar. What was THAT
about?

Also, the monumental number of options in the program might overwhelm more
casual users, eh?
