FMedit is the closest thing I have found. The abandoned freeware version
can still be found, although I don't remember where I found it, atm.

Formats don't have to be as comprehensive; basic graphic formats, txt, doc,
rtf, html etc

If you download 602 suite, you can use the included 602 album
component to achieve what you want. Just run 602 album like windows
explorer, with drives and folders in the left pane, and you'll get a
thumbnail of most of your files in the right pane - so far, I've found
that it works with .txt, .log, .ini, .rtf, .doc, .htm, .bmp, .gif,
..jpg, and .png. The thumbnail size can be adjusted using NumPad + or
-, and if the thumbnail is not enough to jog your memory about what's
in the file, you can click on the right hand corner and get a popup
scrollable window with the full contents. Naturally, double clicking
on the thumbnail will open the file in its associated application.

Download at www.software602.com (free registration required)

(feeling quite dumb, atm)

I have been using 602 for quite sometime, but I always remove 602test,
photo and album when I iunstall it (just leaving the Tab (Excel) tool.
..

Thank you very much.

btw - view is avaialable for just about every file type including pdf and
html.

xls doc and rtf's are ALL available as thumbnail previews! as are graphic
and text files.

I have some folders (business related) that contain txt files, doc's,
htmls,jpegs etc. What I would like is a setup similar to ACDSee's Browser;
the ability to see the contents of the folder in thumbnail (or details)
form and then be able to have a preview window to sneak a peak at the
contents of each file. (most files?)

For the last couple of weeks I've been experimenting with a program called
Optimal Access (http://www.optimalaccess.com). It is a tab-based file
manager and browser, and is very customisable.

I've discovered that it's also a great viewer. You can set it up to have a
file view on one side of the screen (with thumbnails if you like), and have
a preview windows on the other. It seems to support a lot of file types,
including Acrobat, Word, HTML, graphics etc. It has become my favourite way
of viewing files, and I'm doing that quite a lot at the moment with
information I've downloaded for my thesis.

It may be worth you looking at, although it does much more than what you
want.

My question is, you need Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. What is this

You can probably find some products there that are payware. ;) If you scroll
down to the bottom of the page at URL below, you can see which ones.

http://www.optimalaccess.com/en/download_products.php

Same page describes the _registerware_ status of Optimal Desktop Standard.

The unlock code is free.

I admit that I hadn't recalled that clarification very well, back when
I'd taken some looks at the program. I'd downloaded and installed. Then
I uninstalled and set it aside until I could spend time sorting out which
integrations into my OS I wanted to keep and which to discard. A while
later, when I stumbled across it off on my archive disk - it confused me
by presenting itself somewhat like payware. To the extent that I think
I deleted. Confusion was due to my having forgotten about the free
registration code steps.

Your description makes it sound attractive. I have one question. Factor of
extra concern to those of us running slightly older systems. Would you happen
to have made any observations about the resources and/or memory demands from
running this application?

POKO,

How long did you look at the site?

Standard version requires (valid email) registration; nags until
registered; expires after 30 days. No mention of other expiration.
Pro and LAN are already $. Pro adds Popup
Blocker, Portal Sharing, Password Recorder, and Alias Manager.

Or maybe I should say "Standard lacks ...." since PL also defines it
as liteware. I've given up using the PL definitions because they
confuse names with characteristics, so name it for yourself. My
tentative classification is:

v3.0 - registration, no expiration, most features, no source, personal
use.

Notes: "Since many of the Shortcut Links are to web pages, please make
sure your are connected to the Net when you first run the Program."
Runs on any updated version starting with Win95b.
Emailed key required.
Standard includes Archive.
Archive is "Free(2)". "(2)Register to bypass splash screen."

I'm downloading now, but won't install 'til Sat. DL is big, 8.3mb,
but what can you expect from a tabbed browser + multiformat file
viewer + zip/unzip/view?

BTW, the site notes that Optimal Desktop (which includes Optimal
Archive) "is hosted on a number of Download sites" and asks that you
use one of those links.

Direct Optimal Access Standard (v3.0 r129) with Archive:
http://www.optimalaccess.com/oadownload.php?version=standard.exe

And if anyone wants to try just Optimal Access Archive Standard (v1.1
r136):
http://www.optimalaccess.com/oadownload.php?version=oarchive.exe

Optimal Desktop and Optimal Archive are free to keep, and Mobile
Desktop is free to try.

Optimal Access is currently offering a free downloadable version of
Optimal Desktop (Optimal Desktop Standard Edition).

Both the software and registration are offered at no cost, but your
(free) registration is still required to unlock it.

Mobile Desktop and our upcoming Professional and Network versions of
Optimal Desktop are not offered as freeware.

Sorry, at the moment I don't have anything handy to check.

Starting the program takes around 3 seconds on my computer while it reads
the configuration files etc.

I first tried it on my last computer, which was around 500 MHz and 64 MB
RAM. It was very responsive. How does that compare with your current
machine?

In terms of viewing documents, it seems quicker to me than many other
programs I've tried. Well, quicker than programs that were written after the
Win 3.1 days!

Hope this helps.

(lots of snips)

Thanks Bill for your clarification.

I'm sorry I forgot that it was registerware. Hope that's not too far off
topic. Whether or not that means it's freeware, the standard version
certainly is free as you stated. The program is very functional - certainly
not crippleware. The browser lacks a popup blocker (which the payware
versions have), but I solved that problem by using Proxomitron. There are
two payware versions, both of which are interesting and off-topic.

Although the program is very useable the way it comes, it is one of the most
customisable programs I've come across. You can customise the menus, icons,
split windows, dual windows, skins, templates, file filters, etc. You can
store multiple configurations in "states", which you can change at the click
of a button.

For web sites I go to a lot, Optimal Access is now the program I use most. I
still often use MyIE for hunting for new sites.

I'm also using Optimal Access increasingly for my file management. I can
choose the folders I go to most often, and stick them on different tabs.
2-pane file management is a snap. And I still find it the best program for
file viewing that I've used in a long time.

<snip>

Very on-topic in this ng. Thanks for recommending Optimal Access.
I've only used it a couple of times, but it might well become a
staple, replacing my PowerDesk install, because of the integrated and
extensive viewer. I wish we knew how long the standard version will
be maintained and available for free.

Has anyone had a chance to compare the viewer with the new
FreshDevices viewer or the OpenOffice suggestion?

I just tried to register Optimal Access. The registration just hung,
consuming as much CPU as it could get. Has anyone registered
successfully? Had similar problems with Win2k?

Hi Bill. I've registered successfully - had no problems at all, but that was
in June. (I may also have registered quite a while ago - early this year, or
some time last year).

When I first heard about Optimal Access, I assumed that the Standard version
was only going to be free for a few weeks. But that was a _very_ long time
ago! I haven't seen anything that indicates it's going to change any time
soon. And given that you can upgrade to two different commercial products,
it's probably in their interest (and ours) to keep it that way.
