The usual reason for this is that the application has gone into "reduced
functionality" mode. Either it is a trial version that has expired, or, if a
retail version, it has not been activated and has now exceeded the number of
times it can be used before activation is required.

If this only happens in one particular document, try opening that
document and clicking on Tools | Unprotect Document.

If all new and existing documents are locked for editing, then
it's probably because you have not activated your Word/Office
software, or because you have an expired trial version of Office
2003. What happens if you start Word and click on Help |
Activate Product? If you are already activated, a dialog box
saying so will appear. If you are not activated, the Activation
Wizard will start. If you have an expired trial version, a
dialog box will prompt you to enter a valid product key or
purchase a key online.

So how do we resolve this then? I think my case is the latter one -- "a
retail version, it has not been activated and has now exceeded the number of
times it can be used before activation is required."
Please do respond, i badly need your help here ASAP! I might need a
step-by-step guide on how to unlock it. Thanks a lot...

Well, you need to activate the product. If it's Word 2003, use Help |
Activate Product. If it's 2007, use Office Button | Word Options |
Resources: activate Microsoft Office.

Ok. Thanks a lot.
But what if the case was the former -- "a trial version that has expired?"
How should you go about it?

If the trial version has expired, then you will need to purchase the
product.

It is locked because this is a trial version that has expired or you haven't
yet activated the product.

It is more likely that you are using Word 2007 that is either a trial
version that has expired, or your copy of Word/Office has not been
activated.

In that version, the equivalent of the Tools menu item that garfield-n-odie
mentioned is the Protect Document item on the Developer tab. If the
Developer tab is not present on the Ribbon, click on the Office Button (the
round pizza like thing in the top left hand corner of the screen and then on
Word Options in the bottom of the dialog and in the Popular dialog, check
the "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon" box.

However, as first mentioned, it is more likely that you are using Word 2007
that is either a trial version that has expired, or your copy of Word/Office
has not been activated.

So what is it, an expired Trial or an un-activated installation?

This has happened to me 2x.... This is a corp edition of 2003. Last time I
just put office 2007 on my machine, that worked, but I was stuck with
2007........

I nuked my machine, installed office 2003 pro, it had worked for a long time
now it's not working again. If you run the "activation" wizard, nothing
happens.

Please help!!!

So what's up with your machine that you cannot use it or why you are trying
to run the activation wizard? Is this still a corporate version?

I need step by step instructions. Where do I select Help/Activate product?
I am using a dell notebook and have installed Office 2003. Went in today and
computer is telling me everyhting is locked.......

Suzanne gave you step-by-step instructions. Look for Help on top of the
program.
