Absolutely. The network version, currently available, is 266MB. I d/led
it, then decided not to install.

Same here. I've been "reading around" regarding SP2 installation issues.
Sounds like it's a hit or miss situation. Some people are reporting no
problems, others are reporting things like significant conflicts with
existing applications on their systems. IBM and HP (maybe others?) have
told their IT departments to hold off on installing SP2 - sounds like they
both want to run SP2 in an isolated atmosphere to see what, if any, problems
are caused on their main applications. I'll wait for the dust to settle
before installing.

If so, is it worth it?

Let's see it's free (except for your time to download and install) improves
the firewall, adds a pop-up blocker to IE and runs fine. I have been running
IE SP2 RC2 since it was released, a few months ago, with 0 problems. I
installed the final SP2 yesterday morning and all is well. I say what are
you waiting for?

The downside is it's 266MB

What is the performance hit?

Installed on 3 machines.
Performance hit = none.
In fact I believe it is definitely faster on the 3 machines.
I'll wait and see if the family notice!

Can a person with Highspeed connection d-l it, save the file to a CD,
and upgrade other PC's running XP?

============================

Can't say that I notice any greater speed, or less time required
for either shut-down or boot-up. Initially, lost my sound capability,
and wireless setup .. which was re-established upon reloading
the sound drivers and going through wireless setup process again.
Aside from those two annoyances, I cannot honestly see where
I have gained any advantage. I do note that some references are
referring to SP_2 level now.

I think that the average lay user would be better off simply waiting
until their next computer comes with SP_2 already installed.

By that time, perhaps MS will have issued vers 7.0 of MSIE (which
they are hyping will be the death-knell of spam and unwanted mails).

It's a lot of time on my 56k
improves the firewall
I use an excellent alternative mentioned in this group, so this isn't
worth much
adds a pop-up blocker to IE
I run Firefox, not IE
and runs fine.
That's yet to be seen... some people are reporting conflicts with
existing software/hardware

Can you guarantee the same for everyone else?

exactly.

Frankly, I'm waiting till I move into my dorm room w/ a fast connection.
I would have liked to order the free SP2 cd MS claims it will send, but
by the time I could get one, I will have moved in.

it is necessary to install the service pack 2 on machines running sp1(a)

some small issues on my laptop (relating to bluetooth and network
connections)
machine seems to run faster

my only regret is that I should not be lazy
my installation is WinXP>SP1a>SP2 RC2>SP2

I should either slipstream SP2 into my WinXP and install
or reinstall WinXP and then SP2 to clean all the uninstallation folders

users having problems after installing SP2 obviously having problems before
installing the latest service pack

For what's its worth, I find the popup blocker is really excellent.
Better than google toolbar (mainly in blocking web dialogs). Excellent
User interface (hotkey to bypass, whitelist, information bar, optional
sound etc the works), excellent functionality. As always MS is not really
a innovator, but darn are they really good at following up.

IE now also gives you more control over the activex controls, and BHO
installed in your computer, you can view, disable, enable them as you
wish. Much like how BHOdemon does it now actually.

The windows security center which is supposedly a one stop place to keep
track of whether your firewall, antivirus, browser settings are updated.
It doesn't recognise Kerio 2.15 , not sure if it does other freeware
favourites like Sygate though.

It's own Windows firewall I believe still only blocks inbound. Though it
gives you slightly more control on what port/program is allowed to accept
inbound and from where.

For antiviruses it recognises Etrust (1 year tie in), it might recognise
AVG,AVAST etc, but again I have not tested.

All this is just fluff really, I don't need a MS center to tell me to
update my antivirus or turn on my firewall.

So far, everything works fine on my computer, fingers crossed.

There's an article about it here :http://tinyurl.com/3l2om

Microsoft has just released a list of about fifty programs which it
says will "perform differently" after installing SP2.

Guess what? Microsoft Office is one of them. As is almost all of the
antivirus programs, Kerio Personal Firewall, and other stuff.

What do they mean by "perform differently"? Who knows? They don't
say specifically what the issues are for each program.

And "coincidentally", Microsoft just happens to be in the process of
going into the antivirus business. They've, of course, already got a
"firewall" included with XP.

One line in the above article says ' firewall related issues' with the
titles in the list. I interpret that to be if the Sp2 firewall is NOT
activated THEN there is not an issue with any of the titles on the list.
This is my own experience for several of the titles are mine (Diskkeeper,
MsOffice, Zone Alarm 4.5 and Norton AV 2003)
Figuring out how to respond to the security panel as it pops up is not all
that clear and it took me a bit of fumbling around since the Sp2
acknowledged I had a firewall and an AV but it didn't recognize WHAT they
were. The solution was to find the check off that says "I have my own and
I'll manage my own"
That security panel icon would not leave the sys tray until I had dealt with
the responses satisfactorily and Auto Update wasn't satisfactory to just say
NO. Finally using the 'Alert me and I'll decide from there' choice was
acceptable and the icon left the tray. WHEN that icon was there Diskkeeper
was a little erratic.

I followed the preparation and installation steps from
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm
It took a fair amount of time preparing, downloading, defrag, reboot,
install reboot etc. etc and there is NO perceptible change. (not even bells
and whistles <LOL>)

By the way, there is a distinct pause in the installation even with the
saved download of 250mg +- as it checks the system and one might think the
whole thing has halted. It appears to be crucial to NOT touch the keys as
the installation is proceeding.

I "did" SP1 and watched it drag a 1.3 CPU to its knees. Let me be the
pioneer on SP2. Please.
