Does that sound threatening ? Obviously not to you, as I used a
Nope.

conditional statement. ?
I can speak english - including big words like "if" - John jumped the
gun, and this just attracts trolls. He clearly implied that he thought

Since you *admit* they're the trolls, why do you keep sucking up to
them? Are you doing some kind of aprenticeship?
the guy was stealing software - yet someone else did a little homework
*before* posting, and found that this was not true.

Good for him. Seriously. Sometimes I feel like the work, sometimes I
don't, as well.
I am not in the Andy Mabbett camp - have been posting here for long
enough for you to realise that - and I would have thought, for you to
avoid making a cheap insult ("big words like "if") - but I do not like

I just get frustrated by all the troll-kissers.
the way John operates sometimes, and will not be scared off by your
cheap insults.

I wasn't trying to scare anybody, so your arrow seems to be missing the
target.

maybe I used the wrong language - I would feel *insulted* if someone
accused me of stealing software - which is clearly what John implied.
-he said (paraphrasing) "I accuse you of stealing software - if I am
wrong, then ignore my accusation")

I would feel insulted by this, as I see the OP did, as he was using
his nephews DoB rather than a serial number as John assumed.

I did admit they were trolls - so where's your apology for insulting
me ? You still don't think I know what a conditional statement is ?

Since you *admit* they're the trolls, why do you keep sucking up to
them? Are you doing some kind of aprenticeship?

I don's suck up to trolls - but have had private email conversations
with John as to why I believe his approach encourages them.
Good for him. Seriously. Sometimes I feel like the work, sometimes I
don't, as well.

OK - I accuse you of stealing software - you use XP Pro, with a serial
number obtained from hackers. If I am wrong, please ignore this.

(How does this feel to someone who is, quite rightly, proud to be a
linux user ???)

I just get frustrated by all the troll-kissers.

There are some in here, who jump on the band wagon, but haven;t sen
them in a while.

read my posts and see if you really think I belong i that camp.
I wasn't trying to scare anybody, so your arrow seems to be missing the
target.

So - in essence.

1) I object to someone being accused in a public forum , with
flimsy evidence.

2)` I offer my opinion that this behavious simply invites trolls
to jump on Johns back and flood the group with accusations against him
of "netcop" (which I did not make)

so you

3) accuse me of ignorance of language, and sticking up for trolls.

I remain of the opinion that we are on the same side as to freeware,
and against trolls in this and most likely other newsgroups.

However, we diagree about methods, and I certainly still disagree with
the accusations you makae against me.

Maybe worth taking this private - don't want to clog up the group.

Interesting. I wondered, at the time, if that was a DOB.

About "if"? I'll pass, but thanks. I still think you failed to handle
the "if" as it was intended (and as it generally means, in English).
I don's suck up to trolls - but have had private email conversations
with John as to why I believe his approach encourages them.

You blame the victim, not the muggers. That's pretty mugger friendly.
Too friendly, in my opinion.

Okay.

(How does this feel to someone who is, quite rightly, proud to be a

It doesn't feel like anything, since I don't match the criterion.
There are some in here, who jump on the band wagon, but haven;t sen
them in a while.

wile ur alot better at the language then they often is!!!!! u might look
inward sum lol he he !!!
read my posts and see if you really think I belong i that camp.

I've read enough of it in your posts, in the past, that I honestly
wasn't surprised to see it again, here. I nearly didn't hit [Enter] on
your post, in the first place, because of this. I'm really not sure why I
ended up reading it after all.
So - in essence.
1) I object to someone being accused in a public forum , with
flimsy evidence.

John included the requisite out in his OP.
2)` I offer my opinion that this behavious simply invites trolls

of "netcop" (which I did not make)

Yes, you blamed the mugee, not the muggers.
3) accuse me of ignorance of language, and sticking up for trolls.

I think you either too much discounted John's conditional; or had your
mind made up about his post before you got to the conditional, and the
blinders kicked in.
I remain of the opinion that we are on the same side as to freeware,
and against trolls in this and most likely other newsgroups.

I don't remember your stance on the criteria for freewarehood.
However, we diagree about methods, and I certainly still disagree with
the accusations you makae against me.

On possible failure to get the "if", or as troll acolyte?
Maybe worth taking this private - don't want to clog up the group.

Similarly, I don't wish to clog up my email.
This means

It do? :)

I think a better analogy would be to some kind of Citizens' Patrol
program. If the contributing members of the community try to keep it on
track, simply as responsible members, then the chances are better that
it will be successful at what it's intended for. That's not a matter of
policework, however quick the disruptors are to shout "netcop", because
it's, like, you know, a kewl thing to parrot -- it's simply a matter of
the community taking care of the community, for the sake of the
community.

Blinky,
I agree. And even better yet: As the trolls in this group are so
quick to point out, it's unmoderated so perhaps an appropriate analogy
would be to say that I and others like me are "gun-toting"
*vigilantes* since the nearest sheriff is miles away.

Mention a gun anywhere in this group though, and your words will get
twisted all out of proportion. So I modify my statement to "peace and
love, big wet kisses 'we'll pound you to death with flowers'" toting
vigilantes. 80)>.

Regardless, my apologies to the OP. No accusation was intended since
my carefully worded post included the word "If" as you mentioned. I
had no way of knowing what the "Serial number" was supposed to mean
other than guessing.

So it appears another innocent visitor is run-off by the vigilante
control freak.

He doesn't really run anyone off ACF. They just lurk and leach and
don't bother to contribute. Or he turns them into vindictive trolls.

Never expect an apology from Blinky, Alistair. He can rationalize
anything in his own warped way to make it "right" in his own mind, no
matter how wrong it actually is. He hasn't been playing with a full deck
for some time now, but it's good to see he still has the ability to
laugh at himself - to be accused of wearing blinders by Blinkered the
Sharleton... ROTFLMAO!

Except when they're trying to do the moderating, of course.

I agree that it looked very much like a serial number related to the
program OP was asking about. In context, I thought it might very well
be just that, too, when it appeared.

But Blinky does contribute a lot to the group. In this case though, I
have given up on rational debate. At least JC will engage in debate
via email - Blinky, at the moment anyway, appears to be having a rough
time, and wants to insult rather than help.

Anyway, end of thread for me - I did consider doing a google search
for "Blinky the shark" and "sorry" - but didn't expect to see a great
number of hits :-)

Cheers

That's an interesting thought but do you think it has any significance?
It's also the day John Randolph Bray, inventor of "cell" animation died. On
a brighter note it's also the date of birth of actress Jodi Lyn Okeefe. She
hasn't offered the world much in the way of acting talents but is fortunate
enough to look like this:

What a severe left-turn this thread has taken, huh?

Yeah. To be honest, I was just being silly.
