That program was shareware (proof is at:
http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?500000028019) and *may* (notice MAY)
even be spyware (lots of the hits I got mentioned spyware in a program
of the name Hearts for Windows) and in any event is no longer
available online. Go here:

http://nelson.oit.unc.edu/~alanh/hearts.html

and you may find a freeware version of hearts that you like.

A warning: I really hope that "user ID" you have isn't the serial
number to Paul Pedriana's program. If it turns out that it is (and I
am still looking for a copy of his program to try it out on) I will
report you to your ISP for engaging in software piracy. I hate having
to do this, but alt.comp.freeware is for the discussion of legitimate
freeware. Please don't bring illegal activity into this group or you
will suffer the consequences.

If that user ID is just a random choice, then please ignore my warning.

If that user ID is just a random choice, then please ignore my warning.

How about a public apology if it's a random choice, or do you think
one wouldn't be needed because this would be one of the very rare
occasions you are ever wrong?

Perhaps you might consider doing the checking first before publicly
accusing a person of criminal activity?

Of course, that wouldn't be nearly as much fun as ... shoot first, ask
questions latter..

You give cops a bad name.

And as soon as you do, he's got you by the short and curlies on
account of having proof that you've downloaded, installed and applied
a hacked serial number to a piece of software you should have paid
for.

You may have jumped the gun with that "warning" of yours, John. A Google
Groups search for the OP's email address + 19781010 shows him using that
combination almost three months ago. A second search just for Serial
#19781010 shows what must be many hundreds of posters using that nym,
stretching as far back in time as I cared to look. I have no idea what the
significance of the 'nym is, but it would appear to have nothing whatsoever
to do with the game of Hearts.

As a trivia question it has got me a bit curious and since you basically got
the ball rolling, I look forward to hearing from you about the significance
of this popular 'nym, unless the OP would care to enlighten us.

Regards,
Ian.

Well that's a relief. And as I said, "If that user ID is just a random
choice, then please ignore my warning."

I think it would have to be the OP to do the enlightening.

Corliss, you're not the Police - thank God. Moderate yourself.

I never said that I was the police, never have. And neither are you.
If you need an analogy though, you might consider me a police informer
who carries a loaded gun and knows how to use it very well.
Your attitude provokes useless trolls like Mabbett.

And a post like yours doesn't? I will continue to do whatever it takes
to protect this group from degenerating into a warez discussion group.
Deal with it because it's not going to stop. Besides, I don't believe
that I was anything other than moderate in my reply. As I said to
Smitty, "If that user ID is just a random choice, then please ignore
my warning."

As for Mabbett, all you have to do is to killfile him. As far as I
know, he's never, *not even once*, contributed anything of any value
to this group. If you haven't killfiled him by now then you really
don't have anybody to blame but yourself for having to read his spew. 80)>

Nah. My intention would have been to immediately uninstall the program
without using it. I know the guys at my ISP pretty well and it
wouldn't be a problem with them. At any rate, the matter is pretty
much closed anyway thanks to Ionizer's research.

John,

if you are an informer with a loaded gun, then everyone should be
worried.

You just threatened to shoot an innocent guy, and don't even have the
guts to apologise.

While I get the impression you have been better behaved recently, you
have got it way wrong here.

Publishing a serial number is *not* software piracy, you clueless fool.
I hate having to do this
Liar.

What illegal activity? If you think there has been any, call the police.

Hint: your forgery of my identity to subscribe me to mailing lists is
illegal in this jurisdiction, if not yours.
If that user ID is just a random choice, then please ignore my warning.

Oh-er! Corliss issued a "Warning"!

So? That would still be piracy, you stinking hypocrite.

So? It's not their rights you would be breaching.

But if today is Tuesday, just ignore my warning...

Yup; guilty till proven innocent...

A spud gun, more like.

No, since there are no "useless trolls like Mabbett".

Film at eleven!

Despite previous assurances from you that it would...

A "warning" is not moderate; neither are (false) allegations of piracy
or "illegal activity".

I think a better analogy would be to some kind of Citizens' Patrol
program. If the contributing members of the community try to keep it on
track, simply as responsible members, then the chances are better that
it will be successful at what it's intended for. That's not a matter of
policework, however quick the disruptors are to shout "netcop", because
it's, like, you know, a kewl thing to parrot -- it's simply a matter of
the community taking care of the community, for the sake of the
community.

I guess we'll have to add you to the list of folks who have trouble reading
big words like "if". You know, like John's original conditional
statement about -=IF=- that number was a registration key.

I've received a lot of good advice from several of the *hardcores* but
Corliss is simply the most arrogant person I've ever seen. Please,
everyone, do as he says...Otherwise...you will be reported to....the police
informer...film at 11...

I guess we'll have to add you to the list of folks who have trouble reading
big words like "if". You know, like John's original conditional
statement about -=IF=- that number was a registration key.

I think you are describing the same thing Blinky -

how about i suggest to you, personally the following:

"If you are really abusing small children, i will kill you"

Does that sound threatening ? Obviously not to you, as I used a
conditional statement. ?

I can speak english - including big words like "if" - John jumped the
gun, and this just attracts trolls. He clearly implied that he thought
the guy was stealing software - yet someone else did a little homework
*before* posting, and found that this was not true.

I am not in the Andy Mabbett camp - have been posting here for long
enough for you to realise that - and I would have thought, for you to
avoid making a cheap insult ("big words like "if") - but I do not like
the way John operates sometimes, and will not be scared off by your
cheap insults.
