Hi Art,
I did not clearly describe what I meant when I said "no
luck."
When I went to the Swiss site to purchase a key file for V3
I was sent to the site of the competing product that I
mentioned earlier.
And I find a place where you can purchase a key file for KAV
personal. Bart has given you a link.
But, on another channel:
You recall that when I now try to install KAV V5 I get the
error that I still have V3 installed. That, despite the fact
that I have un-installed it, and rebooted.
I attempted to clean my registry of dead keys, had a bunch
and deleted them, but still no luck on the installation of
V5.
This raises two questions:
Might you have any ideas about what I should be looking for
in the registry to manually clean it out?
Do a search for "avp" for one thing. You'll find many entries.
But be damn careful. Your best bet is to restore the registry
from backup.
And, I have very good backups.
To go back to a point prior to installing V3 I could just
restore a complete image, but I wondered if it would be
possible (and/or advisable) to merely go back to an earlier
registry.
If I were to try the latter, what is the file that I would
want to restore?
That's a dangerous way to do things on Win 2K. There are
MS articles on backing up and restoring the registry you can
Google up. Personally, I use the freeware app ERUNT, as I've
already mentioned. I backup both the System and User registries.
Since you have a complete image, why not restore from that?
BTW, I use XXCLONE to create a bootable drive as a backup.
It works well with Win 2K. To restore, I change the CMOS setting
to boot from HDD1 (secondary master) first. Then doing a XXCOPY
from C: to D: (backup drive HDD1 to primary drive HDD0) does
the restore. I then reset CMOS to boot up normally after removing
the backup drive.
