No it does not work splendidly,

It does on my system.
the hit on system performance is
unacceptable, the no end of problems it causes to Windows and other
applications is unacceptable, it is garbage, plain and simple. Feel free
to use what ever you like, but don't bring others down with you.

Feel free to use whatever you like, but do not tell me what I know from
my own experience to be true is false.

I've used AVG for some time and haven't been stung yet.

more than 74 machines in two Sororities were compromised while using up-
to-date the latest AVG software while those using Norton (residential),
Symantec (Corporate), McAfee, CA or the MAC's were not compromised. This
has happened several times, from version 6.x of AVG to the current,
happens every year, at least twice.

I'm surprised their computers ran fast enough to catch a virus using
Norton. Maybe a cold.

Good thing for me I'm not in a sorority.

The vast majority of HijackThis logs we're seeing at AumHa Forums and
elsewhere *still* show AVG as the installed AV app. Coincidence? I
think not.

I think viral and non-viral infections need to be teased out before
reaching any conclusions.

Also, does AVG allow for automatic updates out of the box, or does it
need to be configured to do so? If clueless newbs don't keep their AV
apps updated (manually or automatically), they obviously won't be
adequately protected.

I would imagine that those who run AVG properly and who *also* run
anti-spyware apps such as AdAware and Spybot S&D tend to be adequately
protected. Now if those folks posting HijackThis logs do have automatic
updates enabled, I'd be willing to reconsider my position. Also, does
anyone have stats on market penetration? Maybe AVG has a higher share of
the market.

Another explanation is that those who post to those HJT forums know a
little more than most other PC users (a little!). So, it wouldn't
surprise me if the majority of PC users who use McAfee or Norton who get
malware just decide to perform a clean install or wind up taking their
PCs to Geek Squad-type places.

I have been told that Avast, AVG or Antivir are good free anti virus
programmes. Which do members think is the best option. They all happen to
be free But I am told that they are all very good and compare favourably with
the brand leaders. By the way I am quite happy to buy a programme and would
welcome suggestions.

Any of the three, but only one of the three on any machine. If you
have two PCs, install a different anti-virus on each for better
protection. Free programs don't nag for $ after 11 months of use
which is a nice feature. Basically, install it once and forget about
it. In any event you still have to practice safe-computing and backup
your stuff.

I use AVG Free, and it seems fine (better than Norton or McAfee, IMHO) as
long as you remember to update it manually.

My free AVG updates automatically. I have AVG on my Internet proxy
server, and use Avast! on my PC. So my email gets scanned at least
twice (on separate machines).

You only think it does.

Thank you all for your replies and help. I may well have posted in the wrong
discussion but 30 replies aint too bad.

As you noticed there are still an uninformed few who think Norton is a good
product, sooner or later their luck will run out and they'll come around.

But, some people NEVER learn.

Yes - well this time we let you get away with it - next time you may not be
so lucky - :-)
Just think - if you had used the correct group you might have scored even
better!

Finding the scheduler for AVG Free and setting it is not too intuitive,
but it's there. Once you set it, you're good to go.

You can have all three at one time as long as only
one is resident.
Which means the other two you have to run the
scans manually.
Its Firewalls you must have only one of.

Some of them are shareware. I cant remember which ones are "free" or
which ones are shareware.

I know that AVG and Avast! have absolutely free versions for
non-business use. You have to hunt a little on their site, scroll all
the way down, etc to find it. I don't recall "shareware" versions,
but there are versions that can be purchased.
