Windows Vista: I'm Breaking up with You

That's a bit over the top. Vista for sure has a lot of warts and it is
also true most MVP's either don't have the expereince to know about
them or prefer to keep quite about them out of fear of losing their
"precious" MVP badge. Many REAL geeks (real ones or even wannabe ones
make a pile of money by pedaling some how-to Vista book or magazine
column) know the truth about Vista, but aren't really surprised.
Afterall its a Microsoft product, nobody really expected it to work
too good in its first release. Hoped it would... for a change, but
with Windows' long (20 plus year history) of release then patch, that
would be expecting too much.

I'm not a big Chris Pirillo fan. Seems like a poser to me.

Vista isn't perfect, there are a lot of issues... But, I love it. It hasn't
given me any problems on my network. I've been using it since early betas,
and have seen many issues resolved. Most of the time, it's a driver conflict
caused by a third party driver; or unsupported hardware. I'm not an MVP, I'm
just a geek that loves to play with new hardware and software. I don't
install an OS on my main work machine just because it's new. I try it on a
non-production machine (which most geeks have sitting around). For Chris
Pirillo to install it on his main machine to play with it, without running
the Upgrade Advisor tool (which would tell him his hardware wouldn't work
right!), or testing it with a dual boot configuration, is just a huge
mistake. Especially for a tech.

Although, his going back to XP is a good choice. If his hardware doesn't
work to get his work done, don't use it. Of course, he could have avoided
all the problems in the first place by doing things right.

Check out http://www.overclockers.com for some recent articles on driver
development for Vista (and XP and 2000: same things going on with Vista
right now!).

Yes, I've also emailed him my responses and thoughts on this. So I'm not
just flaming him knowing he isn't listening...

Chris Pirillo couldn't 'tech' himself out of a paper bag without somebody
else Googling the answer for him so he could steal it and call it his own.
And then sell it to his worshippers.
Talk about a 'wannabe'. Sheesh.

Announcing a hufe speed difference between XP and Vista without listing
bench mark numbers? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
Little Chris should do his home work better!

Jim we all know that you are deadly against Vista, why bother to keep
posting here just go back to XP and its relevant newsgroups, not a personal
attack but it justmakes more sense. Or do you have time enough to sit all
day long thinking about what to write next?
Oh anduuuuuuh Jim Vista isn't STUPID, maybe you are?

Windows Vista: I'm Breaking up with You:

"My scanner doesn't really work (Hewlett-Packard Laserjet 3052). HP hasn't
caught up with support yet, and software updates won't be available until
SP1 time-frame. The software works like a charm in XP - amazingly well, as a
matter of fact. "

Did you attempt to use XP drivers? Did you try 'Compatibility' mode?

"Windows Movie Maker crashes on a regular basis. "

Doesn't here.

"My IPFax software doesn't work (the driver will likely never be updated to
be Vista-compliant). Never, EVER caused me a problem in XP. I need this
software to work, and dual-booting to use this is not an option. "

Windows Vista B/U has FAX.

"I still can't get my Lifecam to work, but wound up purchasing the vastly
superior Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision instead (which puts Microsoft's new
webcam software AND hardware series to shame). "

And, the point? Microsoft has stated quite emphatically they are not all
that much into the hardware side of things (save XBox and keyboards). I bet
the Logitech is amazing ..

"On the same machine (AMD Quad FX), XP trumps Vista in terms of performance.
I don't have specific benchmarks on hand, but I can tell you the difference
is quite palpable."

I doubt it .. and, of course you don't have benchmarks to prove it.

" This is even with most of Vista's eye candy tuned to a dull roar. We'll
see if it runs just as quickly when everything's reinstalled there. I only
discovered this after rebooting to try my scanner in XP - blazing
differences, similar tasks.
NVIDIA chipsets and video cards. Need I say more?"

You should say less.

"I simply can't get to my OS X machine from Vista (or mount a WebDAV
server). "

Learn how to configure a network then.

"Copernic Desktop Search, a far superior desktop search client to Microsoft's"

No, it's not.

".. either doesn't like Vista or Outlook 2007 - not sure which, yet.

You don't seem sure about anything as far as I can tell..

"Either way, I can't run it right now - and the Windows Desktop Search tool
is still as lame as ever (sorry, Brandon). I'll miss the new Start Menu, but
I think there's similar third-party software that'll keep me happy in the
meanwhile.
Explorer keeps losing my view settings. THIS IS DRIVING ME UP THE FARKING
WALL! "

"Folder Options .. tell Vista to remember view settings. Not too hard.

"Now, I realize that XP suffers from this problem as well, but it's never
been this bad. There are so many new options that it's difficult to reset
each window's view every time - including column headers, which are now
permanently stuck on "Tags" and "Date Taken" (even though I may not be in a
folder with objects supportive of these fields). Yes, I realize this problem
stretches back centuries - but it seems to have gotten worse, not better."

They're adjustable .. take time to look at how the software works.

"My workaday software still seems to suffer from weird quirks now and again.
I really don't have the time or patience to wait for each developer to catch
up just so I can go on living my life. All these little annoyances are
starting to add up to one major headache. Instead of detailing each one
separately (and extending this list exponentially), I'm just wrapping all of
'em together into one point."

Well thanks fo the point, but my guess is that you hurry things, don't take
the time to check or investigate and that many of these problems are of your
own making.

Well according to his article it was a new install, and its not really
his fault if they hardware he had at his disposal wasn't fully
compatible, but he didn't say the hardware was the issue so you are only
assuming. Chris' assessment is bang on with my own and so many others'
so it's no surprise.

As for speed difference, from my own experience on no less than 8
distinct Vista boxes from customers (plus what I've tested in stores
before) Vista as considerably slower than XP. Those who say otherwise
are testing wit ha tainted/overloaded/infected XP install, guaranteed.
Every test we ran with an untainted install of XP, either fresh or one
with several common applications on it (but 100% malware free) ran so
much quicker.

If only people like you who seem to feel everything Microsoft does is
new and improved and warranted would get your heads out of your asses
and do some real world testing you wouldn't look so stupid.

There is a big difference.. with all other versions (except windows ME)
I always could see much improvement.. especially XP was fantastic!
I loved it right from the start... and I always was a grand supporter or MS.

I skipped windows ME and avoided it as much as I could.. so it didn't effect
me much..
it was just a fill in to generate revenue between releases anyway.. not a
significant release like vista is.
So you see I have not said a bad word about Microsoft ever until the vista
era products.
its not only vista, but office2007, wmp11 and ie7 that are stupid too ( and
some others that are not even worth mentioning)
Vista is horrible.... clearly the worse OS ever made by Microsoft compared
with
the technology available at the time. Its worse that windows Me too because
it will effect more people...

How could vista transform me from a Microsoft supporter a vista basher?

the quality is rock bottom in design first of all and then implementation.
Say you can fix implementation with service packs.. but the design and
concepts will be there for the life of the product...

vista is a sad tragic story in technology

I've had few problems with it. No matter what the new OS [new, at least, to
my computers] there are near always small glitches and considerations. That
is to be expected as I don't buy new computers with the OS pre-installed. I
usually build them myself and install the OS on my own. So there's always
something ..

... with Vista, I had to figure out why my Logitech camer a didn't work and
why the printer, although it could print when directly hooked, couldn't
network with a computer running Vista. These were worked out one way or
another w/o undue difficulty.

All's said and done, I'm quite happy with Vista's performance.

AT LAST! thank you for saying this... I am starting to think that I am going
insane,
as the only person on earth that can see when a computer is slower or faster
.... lol

thank you.....

I can confirm your findings 100% with all my detailed tests on 4 machines

If Vista was my wife, I would head to divorce court immediately, then to a
psychiatrist to figure out how I got involved in the first place!
