I don't know where you are living, but I am in Egypt, and they require
that you download a software which dials into their service. The
utility also includes a built in browser (which is IE based, and since I
block IE from accessing the net, it does nothing for me) which is
supposed to serve local ads. So this is something in the spirit of
Gator and the likes. I am still experimenting with it, but what alarmed
me was that the utility was trying to accept connections from the
server.
So, to conclude, and here is the relevance to this ng, the free software
that is needed to use the service may have hostile *ware built into.

AKA "spyware".
BE CAUTIOUS, and have your system defenses up when you try it..

Thanks for the clarification, Khaled. That's reason enough for people
to not use the software and I agree, let's leave it at that.

You're free to think what you like about Egypt, I'd like however to not know
these your thoughts, they hurt me (and many others I hope).

I'm sure all Egyptions just love the shit out of Americans. Whatever,
I don't want to go further down this road.

Again, no thanks on gawab.

Sounds like adware. However, I saw nothing about having to install any
software. Maybe that information is presented after registration.

By the way at the very least, in order to use their POP service, you'd
have to connect to their server in order to download email.

Well sir, there is nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree.

I'm not trying to change your mind, just trying to let others know
that there is more than one opinion on the subject.

I'm quite sure everybody's aware of this already.

About Johns remarks (re: Egypt and terrorism) I'd say he is simply
displaying his ignorance
has he ever not?

Many non Americans would agree with you. In any case as Americans
spend billions of dollars a year, and UN vetos, to directly/indirectly
supporting the assassination of Arab leaders, the killing of Arabs in
places like Palestine and the occupation of arab lands I would hardly
think it appropriate that they accuse others of terrorism.

I registered for their 15meg service and had no requirement or request
to install any software whatsoever, neither did it attempt to install any
activex components. I was presented with a fair (but not unreasonable)
amount of ordinary browser based advertising if I used the web interface,
including some advertisers that use the common place tracking cookies.

However with the "silver" option you would presumably only need to use
it to configure the server based anti-spam filtering rules and mail pulling
from other accounts.

I haven't been a member long enough to tell if they will generate spam or not.

I saw no indication of gawab.com supporting terrorism.

Incidentally IMAP4 access is also available.

Heh, but of course where their profit goes is anybody's guess. I hope
they're above the board in this respect.

Thanks Mel. But at the very least the service is a kind of adware and
thus it's not freeware.

You might want to check your own country's policy on occupation of Arab
lands, then find a political newsgroup to post your rants.

As I said, that's only for WEBMASTERS using their mail service. The
END USER service is totally ad and spam free. I've been using it for
over a year now with ZERO spam and ads served to me. Granted, I've
been using POP to get my mail from their mailbox, and haven't used
their web-based mailbox.
