Another 1 GB (actually 1001 MB) free web mail provider

I signed up for the POP3 "silver" package ... but I can't send email through
their SMTP server.

I think my ISP is blocking outbound SMTP (port 25) connections.

Forgot to mention: they also have a smaller 15 MB version that
gives you POP access to your mail, too -- which is handy. Shame
they don't provide it for the 1 GB version though.

Did a Sam Spade on the website address and notice that the outfit's
located in Alexandria, Egypt.

I for one will pass. 80)>

Oh, and by the way, free online email services aren't freeware so this
thread is off topic. Sorry, but it's true.

Doesn't seem to stop all the Gmail posts here. :P

In addition to my other post: www.gawab.com is not just a free online
mail service -- it's also a free POP service, and thus can be used with
any mail client. Hence, on-topic.

Key word here is "service". Freeware are programs that you can install
on your computer. But oh well...

I for one will pass

Storing a POP account in an e-mail client could be considered installation.

No, freeware is *software*. It need not be an installable executable.
However I do agree that free services are slightly off-topic, but
acceptably so.

Heh. That would certainly be stretching the point past breaking since
it would simply be data, not programming. Besides, my main issue is
that the company is headquartered in Egypt, a major source of
terrorism. Plus:

"Webmaster operating under the “Basic Service” contract is prohibited
from charging or inferring any charge for subscriber's use of service.
However, Webmaster may, at his sole discretion, present banner
advertisements in an area offered to Webmaster by Gawab.com and
charge/collect fees for banner displays at his/her sole discretion. For
this purpose, Webmaster will receive 50% of the available Banner
advertising placement space to use as desired. Gawab.com, Inc. is not
responsible and may not be held accountable for transactions made by
Webmaster with any third party with respect to advertising placement.
Gawab.com,Inc. has the right to e-mail the users of the system
notifying them about Gawab application updates and advertising contents."

I'd really like to know where the profits from their sales of
advertising are going. But then of course, adware definitely ISN'T
freeware. Period.

No thanks.

Then you'll love it when Uncle Billy starts renting you software he
calls "web services" via his dotnet bull.
However I do agree that free services are slightly off-topic, but

And I totally disagree. Web services are not freeware and are totally
off topic in this group. This recent "GMail" nonsense for instance, is
not on topic and I filter out all of it.

Sorry Vic, but we are just going to have to agree to disagree once
again. Nothing is going to change my opinion and the same applies to
you I'm sure.

Which of us other members side with is another issue.

All this applies to *webmasters* using Gawab's service, and NOT to *end
users* that are using Gawab's AD-FREE mail service (which I actually do).

About Johns remarks (re: Egypt and terrorism) I'd say he is simply
displaying his ignorance, I was going to respond, but I thought that
it would be a bit off-topic..

I don't know where you are living, but I am in Egypt, and they require
that you download a software which dials into their service. The
utility also includes a built in browser (which is IE based, and since I
block IE from accessing the net, it does nothing for me) which is
supposed to serve local ads. So this is something in the spirit of
Gator and the likes. I am still experimenting with it, but what alarmed
me was that the utility was trying to accept connections from the
server.

So, to conclude, and here is the relevance to this ng, the free software
that is needed to use the service may have hostile *ware built into.

BE CAUTIOUS, and have your system defenses up when you try it..

Regards,
KHaled.

In order to avoid flames, please take away this sort of prejudice/racism
from your posts.
You're free to think what you like about Egypt, I'd like however to not know
these your thoughts, they hurt me (and many others I hope).

Well sir, there is nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree.

I'm not trying to change your mind, just trying to let others know
that there is more than one opinion on the subject.
