Bob Powell [MVP]

I'm sorry but if you are an MVP you would at least know not to advertise in
the newsgroups. This is not the place to do it. Please find another location
to advertise, and cancel this post because this is not accecptable.

I completely agree with you Brian. I complained the other day, but got mixed
reaction. One of his supporters defended it and someone else agreed with me
in the end. The poster himself, does not see anything wrong in what he is
doing.

Can you imagine what it would be like in here if everyone decided to try and
tout their wares in the newsgroup

Regards - OHM#

OHM,

I agreed with you in my very first message about this, not at the end.
Read it over please?

You all need to stop responding to junk mail, because some mail servers
filter this crap out, and then when you reply to it, it defeats the purpose
of having a filter.

erm, yes you did, but It doesent matter anyway as I cant find it and its
really not important enough to argue about.

Here is is

Hi OHM,

You are not wrong doing this in my opinion.

You have the full right to it and I agree with you I said.

Cor

Then using your logic Cor, It is then as valid for Bob to do and say what he
wants as it is for me to have an opinion on what it is Bob does and says
without anybody telling me I'm wrong for it. Dont you think this is rather
limiting ?
I still cant help thinking it is no less spam than and other advert we see

Hi,

Newsgroups don't really have much to do with "junk mail" being that NNTP
servers are not mail servers, and the offending poster has been instead of
giving help for free like the group is designed for, offering to help for a
cost to virtually ever post they have replied to, which kind of defeats the
purpous of the newsgroup.

It also kinda defeats the purpose of being an MVP does it not?

It looks like we have another chance to generate another silly thread.

There can hardly be a problem with somebody announcing a newsletter of
interest to members of a newsgroup... (particularly may I add) when the guy
puts "ANN:" into the subject line.

The "can you imagine" argument was something we used to use in the 10th
grade and it's a childish argument... what if everybody decided to drive
their car at the same time on the street in front of your house? Well first
it isn't going to happen and second we'll deal with it whenever that day
arrives.

On the other hand, can you imagine if "everybody" decided to post lame humor
in this group? Clearly we need to put a stop to such actions (wouldn't you
agree) on the off chance that "everybody" decides to do it?

The "problem" is not the anouncement (if it was how to get a free copy of
some utility you were thinking of buying I'll guess you wouldn't argue about
it) it is that everybody seems to think they should chime in about it. The
single message becomes an "issue" and dozens of messages follow.

This is revisted time and again in just about every newsgroup. For gosh
sakes, let it pass. :-)

If you had bothered to look in a group outside this one, you would have noticed that he DOES offer
help for free nearly EVERY SINGLE TIME that someone asks a question. Just cause he doesnt use VB,
and therefore doesnt hang out in the VB Group, doesnt mean he doesnt offer free help.

He does offer to give LENGTHY or COMPLICATED complete code examples for a very very small fee.
These are the kinds of things that you see here where someone asks a complicated question, expects
code to be written for it, and gets a bunch of answers along the lines of "Go read a book" or
"Look it up on the internet, there are a lot of examples there" or "You dont really understand
what it is you are trying to do, come back when you are having a minor problem that i can spout
out an answer to in 5 seconds."

His newsletters are COMPLETE code for how to solve the issues contained in them. They are not
just little cut and paste code segments that everyone likes to post out here in the newsgroups,
but complete, and usually somewhat complicated code that has been REQUESTED.

Lighten up and read one, maybe you would understand the difference.

You sound very passionate when you talk about him !, he obviously impresses
you greatly.

Oh yea, if he doesn't know anything about VB, then WTH is he spamming here?

*ding-buck-chicka-ding*

I just think he has very valuable information and deserves not to be lynched just because he wants
to charge a little bit for complicated code. I dont even know the guy personally, I have only
interacted with him via the MS newsgroups.

I think lynching is too weak a punishment, I think he should be drawn &
quartered... very slowly.

If you were to wander over to the drawing newsgroups, you would see that
Bob gives a tremendous amount of help for free. He also hosts a GDI+ FAQ
which has some fantastic articles -- alse FREE.

Before condemning someone for not giving free help, be sure you know what
you are talking about.

As for advertising on the newsgroup, I can see why it may be annoying but
I, personally, don't care one way or another if it helps me learn vb.net.

Cheers

Hmmm..

OHM,

I checked it out on the newsgroup page from Microsoft.

I think Bob is not that wrong accoording to those rules.
It is an announcement that can benefit this newsgroup.

You are free to do what you want of course as much as Bob and what you are
doing now is also in the benefit of the newsgroup.
