Hi Peter,
It depends if you some extra money to spend and what your replacing.
How old is it ? Is it twitchy ?
I have switched from a Intel 478 socket P4 3.2 Ghz to a AMD 939 2.4
Ghz X2 core; I am happy. The P4 was fast enough, but it ran hot.
Damn hot. 56C at idle, to a shut off temp, while in Doom3. I just
fixed the P4 with a Zalman 7000B cpu cooler, temp dropped 14 C at
idle.
P4 is now tolerable. The 4800+ cpu came with AMD heatpipe cooler, it
runs at 35 C at idle.
IMO, if a computer doing all you ask of it, wait for that which will
come later, when your sure ready to part with your money.
Keeping in mind, better tech is always ahead. ( knock on wood ) I can
highly recommend the AMD 939 4800+ CPU on a Asus A8N-E.
However, the Playstation 3 is on the way. IMO, PC Gaming in the
future will fade, with Gamers turning away from the continual high
cost PC Gaming v.cards and cpu upgrades.
With Gamers looking at the easier multiplayer, faster entry and less
cost, for the same fun. It does depend however on what a Playstation
3 can do.
IMO, the need for expensive Gaming cards, may not be as necessary
tomorrow, as one today believes. Time will tell.
