Alternatives to QImage?

That's because you've never tried to get your money back when his
software won't work on your scanner despite him claiming it does...

I was talking about Mike Chaney, the Qimage author. I know nothing about
Ed Hamrick, except what you've written.

Jon.

In my opinion, this often heard remark that printing is superior is a
bunch of crap. [snip]
I format my images in Qimage and print them to a file and print the
file from Photoshop.

So you print to file from Qimage (which is the equivalent of printing from
Qimage except the data isn't passed to the print driver), then use
Photoshop to pass the already processed file to the print driver, and you
claim that it's Photoshop doing the printing?
Those users, don't know how to use Photoshop

I have to admit that I've only been using Photoshop for about 10 or 12
years, so I'm by no means an expert, but has it occurred to you that, just
maybe, it's you that doesn't know how to use Qimage?

Apologies. I wasn't talking about Mike. See how wires get easily
crossed? :)

So what is IR cleaning ?
It's Vuescan's version of ICE.

This is where my ignorance really shows...

What's ICE ?

DigitalICE from Applied Science comes with a lot of scanners (though I
believe you can buy it as a separate software package as well?).
Basically, you pout the slide in the scanner, apply ICE when scanning
and all your dust and scratches disappear. It's more complex than
that, but that's basically what it does.

Ah ! OK thanks. I've written a few things like that to clean up
satellite images.

Used to have hours of fun watching it nibble away at small islands in
the med !

Applied Science Fiction's (now part of Kodak) dICE requires hardware
Infrared scanning to occur to work. It needs the scanner to be
frequency corrected and to product an IR light source to scan the
image/film/print to use as a mask to remove the flaws seen under IR and
ignoring the visible light information .

LOL! Understand - but I thought you could see a cigarette packet from
space now? ;-)

You mean CMS or something else ?

and to product an IR light source to scan the image/film/print to use
as a mask to remove the flaws seen under IR and ignoring the visible
light information .

I'm confused. Presumably the end result sought is the visible image ?
And presumably the idea is somehow to correct defects in the visible
image using the IR data ?

Or have I got it completely wrong ?
