Does this group, or the freeware-community, still need
alt.binaries.freeware?

More and more there are illegal contents posted in this group. When we
don't need that group anymore, I think anybody can do with this group
what he or she likes. When we like to keep that group for freeware
only, it can be of any help when we send abuse-reports to the ISP's. In
the past Ms. Boomer, Dick Hazeleger and myself did this, without many
results though. When more folks send abuse-reports to the ISP's, maybe
the illegal use of ABF will stop or decrease.

With kind regards,

Hi Henk,

To answer your question: YES, we do need a binary group, where else
would you post that "hard to find" pice of freeware?

You are right, more and more the "freeware" for which the binary group
was meant is being abused by people who seem to think that "freeware"
is exactly the same as "free warez".. which it isn't! Now, I just
wonder whether you, Ms. Boomer and myself are the only people from acf
monitoring that NG... to be honest, I don't think so.

<soap box mode on>
Then WHY is it that - seemingly - these three are the only ones
reporting abuse in that group (to be called "NetCops", or even
"NetNazis" as a token of gratitude, instead of "responsible
Netizens"?)... Easy question, easy answer... because the rest doesn't
care a bit, are not interested, are too lazy! But they know how to nag
about it, Henk... and when ABF finally will be gone froim the major
news server... then you'll hear them whine... too late as so often in
life!

To all those who were "passive" in this matter in 2003: Today is a good
day to decide to contribute into the effort of just a few to keep ABF
OUR binary group and not the one hijacked by the warez types.

The effect of reporting abuse may not show off immediately... don't
expect telenet.be, chello.nl to post a message that they have taken the
proper actions... but believe me... they do!!!
<soapbox mode off>

Regards to all (and thanks to Henk for bringing this issue up).

I think most people don't monitor a.b.f (I don't), but maybe those who do
can post "abuse cases" here?

I monitor and complain but I'm stuck with dialup and I can't spend the
time to download a multi-meg just to get headers so I just send
complaints about the little ones.

I'd love to monitor it but unfortunately, I access these NG's via
individual.net and it appears they don't carry that particular NG

I hate to admit it, but I just don't know how bianaries work. I cant
figure out how to download anything, and sometimes when I try I just get
garbage.

You can use "news.readfreenews.net" to access the a.b.f. newsgroup. free..

Funny thing is... I did most of my reporting while on DUN (since a
month on DSL), but I agree that multi-meg files are not something you
should download every day (especially not if you're paying your
Internet connection by the second). But then: Are Henk, Ms. Boomer and
I the only ones on cable, dsl or cheap telephone (DUN) rates? Again, I
don't think so...

I feel that this looks a lot like a previous experience I had here: It
is great if someone else does it, so why bother yourself? (I am
referring to my work on the (no longer maintained) ACF spyware list,
for those who don't understand this remark). Just as in real life, it
is the responsibility of all who "live" in abf to keep it clean of
those "warez" types, not just of three, four or ten!

Perhaps 2004 will be better... we'll see!

I looked. All the entries are like movie files. Download a series, high
lite them and right click then combine and decode. Except they don't!!
They seem to but nothing is there??

I have no idea what is there. I download at 2.1 to 2.7 so that isn't a
problem. Why would freeware need such long files?

Please tell us Noobs how to report abuse.

Well, you use Outlook Express... press [alt]+[Enter], click on "Show
Source", press [Ctrl]+[A] to copy everything in there to the clipboard,
open a new eMail, copy the lot in the body area. Find the "abuse [at]"
address copy or enter that one in the "To:" field.

Then go back to the body, top of page, hit a few times then [Enter]
buttun and write a nice polite complaint to that abuse department...
could be done in less than 5 minutes (exept for the time needed to
download)

Hi JanC.

Now, somehow I don't think THAT would be a great idea. Think of those
who post about updates to (freeware) AV programs; I don't think it
would be wise to start that all over again, but perhaps our low-volume
discussion group alt.comp.freeware.discussion could be used for those
reports? What are the sentiments about that?

Dick

ntl Broadband (UK) does not carry any binaries either

Besides the solutions given to Steven Burns, who has (or had) the same
problem, in the last three or four months how many times there was a
request for free news servers? I can be mistaken, but it would surprise
me if there weren't at least three or four amongst the mentioned
servers which do carry the binary groups (read only perhaps, but
nevertheless).

It is like Henk wrote in his initial message: The more people complain,
the better the result will be. Does it look like an ISP isn't willing
to co-operate? Inform them then that you informed the BSA, that should
put the heat under their **** to do something about it, and... do
inform the BSA; remember that too often those who use freeware are
being put on the same level as those who use "warez", that freeware is
mistaken as being warez (ask Henk, he had that problem with his ISP
earlier this year)...

It is about time that we, who use those exellent programs for free, do
something to keep "our" freeware separated from the criminal use of
"warez", not just letting a few pay the price!!!

Regards to the group.

You would do that if you would want to use the files (which most
probably are Yenc files). For an abuse report you only need one,
especially if it is like the one currently sitting in my inbox there...
crossposted to a warez group, that one will be sent to the ISP asap
today.

In my case it is none of the above (doesn't care a bit, are not
interested, are too lazy!) but the fact that I am only on the internet
for about an hour a day at the most and most of the time there is
already an "abuse reported" message there. Or else I only glance at
headers and only rarely download the full message if the header looks
interesting so I do not know of the abuse.

But are you saying that the more people who report the same message as
abuse the better? If so I will take action when I notice abuse. It was
just that I thought action had already been taken!!

Cheers and Happy New Year

Hi Paulie,

Yes, the more people who report abuse to an ISP the better: one is a
nagger, two... hmm, three could be true, 500 we better look into it...
1000.. what the heck is this person doing?

Greetings and a Happy New Year

What is the BSA?

Hi,

Although they share the same abbreviation, it's NOT the Boy Scouts of
America, but the Business Software Alliance, website can be found at:
