AGP Aperture: Don't set it above 64meg

I've been seeing sporadic but fairly frequent crashes or reboots while
playing CSS and other games, and after changing my AGP Aperture on this
6800GT from 256 or 128 to 64meg, the crashes have disappeared.

This is on a NF7-Sv2 mobo, so perhaps this doesn't hold for all systems, but
check your Aperture size if you are seeing any crashes.

Interesting. I heard that works for ATI cards. Doing this I got a rock solid
system with an ATI X800 Pro. Before that I had seldom random crashes and
freezes in some games - without any logic. All this stuff with AGP aperture
size, AGP speed and Fast Writes never did any good to me. I now play with
AGP size 64MB, AGP speed 4x (instead of 8x) and Fast Writes off and get the
best speed and stability out off it.

My mobo is a A7N8X-Deluxe and games run much smoother for me at 128
than 64. It is down to individual setups, you can't make blanket
statements about what works better.

Its not a good idea to generalise. The bottom of this page covers AGP
Aperture settings in depth

have mine set to 128 MB (Radeon 8500DV) and its perfectly reliable. Remember
that the AGP Aperture part of system memory is only delved into when the
graphics cards own onboard memory gets full.

I recall it could be a problem on win98 systems with a lot of memory
eg 512M or more. Large agp apertures eat up some win98 memory
addressing capability or some such voodoo.

128/256 are also smoother for me; or more specifically I'm noticing
slight hitches on entering a new area that didn't happen before, but as I
say the game doesn't crash anymore.

I have 512mb and a couple of pci cards, so there may be memory bus or
pci bus contention issues that are not obvious.

Having my AGP Aperture set to 128MB has never ever caused any difficulties
for me, but thanks for posting anyway since it is a troubleshooting tip that
I might never have thought of. It may be something to keep in mind in the
future.
 
Are you overclocking? Is the PCI/AGP frequency locked down to 66/33?

You have all the useless crap like fast writes and sb addressing turned off,
right?

On a related note, I once had a SiS735 mobo with a Geforce3. All DX8 games
would exhibit horrible artifacts when the AGP aperture was set above 64 MB.
OpenGL games worked just fine, though. Nor could I duplicate this quirk with
my ATi 9800 on the same mobo.

You have 256 MB of video memory, so it doesn't matter as much. My 128 MB
9800Pro gets far better performance with the aperture set to 256 MB when
running the Ruby demo. Mind you it is not a game, but there are applications
that tangibly benefit from a large aperture.

No problems so far, on either my previous SiS735 or the current KT880 board.

Ever wonder why we have A.C.P.V.Nvidia and A.C.P.V.Ati? If all video

AGP aperture discussions are relevant to both newsgroups. The aperture
is set on the motherboard, not the video card.

If you read the AGP aperture thread on both ati and nvidia ng's, what's
the problem? That thread would be applicable to both brands.

People do speak "ATI" on the nvidia ng, and the reverse. Most of the
die hard fanbois have been replaced by people who use cards from both
manufacturers. So really, don't go looking for a flaming for that :)
I read both ng's daily myself as I have both brands of card running in
my systems right now.

In looking at the posts about the AGP aperature, it appears that the
settings have relevance in both the ATI and Nvidia groups, as it applies
to both cards (if not other cards too). Had it only been posted to ACPM I
might have missed it as I don't subscribe to that group, but I do
subscribe to groups that related to the vendors products I use.

It seems to me, having been using Usenet since the early 80's, that the
post and discussion, before it digressed into a posting discussion, was
completely on-topic.

Might also help if you understood that some ISP's don't carry all groups,
like the RR server in Ohio doesn't carry the Nvidia group at all.

Where are you seeing this??? The Very first post in this thread in the
ATI newsgroup has No questions at all. He simply made an observation on
what worked for him in the hope that some (non anal-retentive) people
would find his experiences helpful.
