Advice....... Don't upgrade just for Doom3 !

Also, someone said something about another line in the same file, but I have
not tried this one:

seta image_cachemegs "32"

He suggested changing this to 96 or 128 instead. Mine is set to 20 by
default (maybe because I have 1GB of RAM), but I have not made any
adjustments to it. I have the impression that you should have a bare
minimum of 512MB of system memory before making such a change though.

You really should try this tweak.. it will elimate the hitching you
get when you open doors and drop down into new areas. Since you have 1
gig like I do you should put it at 256. Here's what mine looks like..
just copy paste.

seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "20480"

Make sure you do all three.

knees.

I think the key point in this argument is that the Doom 3 engine is likley
to form the basis of a lot of games to come so it probably is an engine you
want to be able to run well.

I'll take the Unreal Tourney engine games ;)

All this crazy HYPE for a game with great textures. Why does it look so
good?

Because you are almost ALWAYS in a narrow hallway.

Big whoopie!

I agree. I don't see what the big deal is. All I see is dark cramped
spaces. Then again I only have an 8500 so that might be it.

Im not impressed with D3. Now FarCry running under my old 8500 made my jaw
drop first time I see it. FC is still the king of eye candy IMHO.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a new card?

I think you guys kind of missed my point.

I wasn't defending Doom 3 in particular (I like it...but I won't get in to
it here). I'm stating that no matter how good or bad a game is, they all
end up in the clearance bin.

UT2003 for example. It's great. It went from $79.99 Canadian to $34.99
Canadian. Return to Castle Wolfenstein, not so great. I saw it at some
places for $99.99 Canadian and sure enough, a few months later, $29.99.

My point was that so what if Doom 3 is in the bin for $30 next year? Far
Cry, Painkiller, UT2004, and all the others will be in there with it
eventually.

Thanks, I'll try that shortly! What exactly are the image_useCache and
image_cacheMinK lines about?

I understand what you are saying and some of the best games I ever
purchased, I got from the bargain bin. But Im still a little let down by D3
after all the hype.

It kind of remids me of the Unreal vs Quake 2 (3?) days where Unreal made my
jaw drop and Quake was all brown, dark and shadowy with the samo-samo
gameplay.

Somebody please tell me that it looks and runs much better with 9700 or
something newer etc.

Honestly though, do I need a better 3D card (8500 now) or is this game
simply an unimpressive dog? System requirments say Im OK.

Maybe it's just me.

This game is really not worth the fuss.
It's only good to bring down the performance of an excellent system to its knees.

Let's face it... Doom3 is a repetitive 'shoot the incoming monster', next.
It does deliver a good gaming experience for a decent system, but frankly it's
nothing new in the area of gaming experience.

Those thinking about upgrading a rad9600/9800 to X800 of Nvidia 6800 are
throwing their money away.

Imo, it would be better game if it's was playable with 3d glass add having some sort of stick to
reproduce the effect of a hand gun.

And again imo a the 9800 ati card family is the minimum requirement to play the game on any system
but again there is some isolated case like oc 9700 card with athlon64 system that can manage to play
whit the beast.

it would be better to upgrade the mobo to a nf3 board and getting a xp64 or else...

9800pro here, and I am throughly unimpressed. Plays OK, looks, well, i
guess OK at best.

Very detailed explaination of many of the commands you can use in the

I appreciate that! I will have to copy it to a text file and read it. I
tried the tweaks you mentioned (all three lines) and I found that Doom 3 was
just the same in terms of performance. I may go back to the default
settings except for the cacheMegs line and see what happens for me. Thanks
anyway though.

If this game slows down even the most powerful systems then thats the result
of lazy programming. I would uninstall this crap

That's odd... that tweak sure helped my rig. I was able to elimate
those annoying freeze ups when you open a door to a new section. Maybe
it was another tweak I did that fixed it(?).

If you don't have the cachemink line you will most likely not be able
to load the game however. :(

I don't think lazy is the right term.

Misguided for sure.

I guess they didn't like their old "benchmark" Quake3 getting FPS
scores of 220 and being dismissed for being outdated ;)

It'd be nice if they released a second set of game textures that
weren't artificially bloated just to sell one series of video cards.

The game could be improved with some simple updates.

Well, tweaks like this are always worth trying. Thanks again anyhow.

Why are so many people complaining that Doom 3 isn't delivering something
new? Doom 3 was never said to have innovative gameplay, only great graphics.

1) It was promising innovative graphics.
2) Most of the games is so goddamned dark you can't actually see them.
3) Half-Life had better gameplay than Doom 3.

Actually when I started playing D3 I set it to medium. I figured it looked
this shitty because of the medium setting. Then, I switched to high.
Apparently my 9700 Pro can handle it pretty well. The only difference in
graphics I noticed is that there's a little more bumpmapping on all the
textures and the textures look less compressed. That's about it. I was
highly unimpressed with the graphics. I think the gameplay is pretty good.
I especially like the way computer consoles are controlled. I'm still
playing it. The story isn't too bad as far as standard predictable
demon-from-hell invasions go.

I think Far Cry looks way better than D3 as well.

Nope. I'm playing it with a 9700 pro, 3.06Ghz P4, and a gig of ram without
any overclocking in high quality (no aa). Plays fine with the occasional
freezup when entering a new area.

Opinion noted and for the majority of it, agreed upon. However ppl have to
realise id make game engines which are used by other developers for their
own games. A new generation of games and thusly computer spec requirements
will emerge. Personally, I'd say check out DOOM3 and see how your system
goes. If it chugs on the lower settings, guess what - time to upgrade,
because all you're going to see from now on is games using that same engine.

Then they could choose the HL2 engine instead *8)
Doom 3, System Shock 2, all seem to have confined small environments
whats it like with wide open environments? Guess time shall tell..

Well FPS games are all generally the same... its a matter of HOW well
they can make you FEEL youre in the game. The original Doom was
scary for its time (The dark, noise etc) as was Unreal...

Unreal 2 has very good graphics, okay story, awsome levels - but the
FEEL of the "story" was still... okay standard stuff.. While HALO is
an excellent Single Player game in that it pulls you in to the
character.... yet its graphics suck, the controls suck, 1/3 of the
maps TOTALL SUCK ASS... lets not get into Multiplayer mode!
It's more annoying than chilling or scary to me. Yea, the Imp's
fireball effects look cool, but that's about it for me. What's the
idea of not being able to hold a flashlight with one hand and fiire a
pistol from the other?

WTF? You really have to switch between flashlight & gun? That is
STUPID!! What, the character can't Duct-tape the flash light to his
gun or wrist or attach it to his battle gear?

In Halo, you have a flash-light and the EFFECT of the monsters in the
flash light is enough... but to SWITCH it off to shoot in the dark??
DUH!

Remember: In the USA - it is dangeroud to draw or write about Heir Bush in a negative way. The police or SS are called, people threaten to kill you. (What country is this again?)

- Fahrenheit 9/11 - Unless you see it for yourself, don't call it "a bunch of lies"... that would be unAmerican.
- White House blows cover of an undercover agent because her husband said there were no WMD (before the USA started the war) - her job was finding terrorist.
