Hello Geoff,
It's not supposed to change it.
I have done multiple installations of SP1 to Windows Vista Enterprise
without it affecting my Activation status.
Prior to the next upgrade to SP1, please run slmgr -dlv all and save the
output.
Then upgrade and see if changes it again.
