Activate problems after cloning Hard Drive

I finish installing Vista Ultimate 64 bit on my computer and I notice that my
computer was freezing a lot after a doing a couple of checks; I discovered
that my hard drive is failing so I decided to get a bigger hard drive to
replace the bad one. I did a Clone disk to disk, but now the OS is asking me
to activate again and when I try to activate I get a message saying that this
number is already in use.

Any ideas

If he wanted to have Linux on his computer then he would have put Linux on his computer. so your 'answer' is not an answer to his question but rather another demonstration of your ignorance.

There is always phone activation.

And there's always Linux.

You can read the OP's mind? Or do you think that the OP isn't capable of
answering for him or herself?

so your 'answer' is not an answer to his question but
rather another demonstration of your ignorance.

If one wants to avoid the flawed "anti piracy" programs that come with
Vista, the best thing to do is install Linux as it doesn't come with
that nonsense. Ergo, my reply was MUCH better than yours where you only
tried, lamely, to insult me rather than help the OP.

Now, go stick your head back up MS' arse and leave the serious computing
to others.

Why not give the O/P a real answer on how to solve his problem instead of
your standard "canned" homily?

To the O/P. A five minute phone call will solve your immediate problem which
was likely caused by imaging an already failed operating system. The image
is an exact photo of what you have. You can take a picture of an ugly person
and have it come out beautiful, can you?

But, because what you cloned to your new drive is already suspect I would
install the operating again from scratch.

By the way, I guess the Linux never suffers from failed hard drives as it is
such a great operating system. And additionally, if a hard drive does fail,
Linux is miraculously immune to defective sectors and drive electronics.

That Linux is one hell of an operating system - **NOT**.

I did help him with his problem by suggesting a viable alternative.

Maybe, Maybe an hour phone call with no positive results too.

We thank you for your ill informed opinion but would appreciate it if
you would stop posting FUD regarding Linux.

Again, you said nothing to help the O/P with his immediate problem!

"Aioe.org hosts a public news server which allows the users to access the
newsgroups from every IP address without providing any kind of
authentication. Only text groups are carried by this site and it's strictly
forbidden to post binary contents, spam and other kinds of abuses.
This site is designed as a last resort access way to USENET for those who
can't find a better option: please respect and support it."

So you are a serious computer user, and you can't find a better option?
Oh...sorry...it's the anonymity you are after, isn't it?

Your reply was a complete nonsense in a group which is concerned with
helping people get their problems with Windows sorted. If the OP wanted an
OS which couldn't run half of his software, then I'm sure he would move to
Linux. In addition, he would possibly choose Linux over Windows Server or
even Unix if he was in the market for a server product. But he quite clearly
isn't.

Who I am is not important. Which news server I use is not important.

More FUD. It *would* solve the activation problem as Linux has no
activation program.

Too late. Windows users don't even remember what it's like to control
their own computers.

Good article here:

: Everyone Wants to 'Own' Your PC
:
: "When technology serves its owners, it is liberating. When it is
: designed to serve others, over the owner's objection, it is
: oppressive. There's a battle raging on your computer right now -- one
: that pits you against worms and viruses, Trojans, spyware, automatic
: update features and digital rights management technologies. It's the
: battle to determine who owns your computer."
:
: It used to be that only malicious hackers were trying to own your
: computers... <big snip> ...There are all sorts of interests vying for
: control of your computer. There are media companies that want to
: control what you can do with the music and videos they sell you. There
: are companies that use software as a conduit to collect marketing
: information, deliver advertising or do whatever it is their real owners
: require. And there are software companies that are trying to make money
: by pleasing not only their customers, but other companies they ally
: themselves with. All these companies want to own your computer.
:
: <snip>
:
: ...Automatic update features are another way software companies try to
: own your computer. While they can be useful for improving security,
: they also require you to trust your software vendor not to disable your
: computer for nonpayment, breach of contract or other presumed
: infractions.

The article has a bit of a pro-open-source/anti-MS stance but the overall
message still stands.

So would putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger. You are not answering his question.

My suggestion would solve his immediate and long term problems.

Microsoft says jump through these hoops before you can use the software
you've paid for and most of the users ask "how high?"

Pathetic.

Is that what this group is about? I thought it was also a forum to
discuss Windows Vista, and was open to all, not just those who have
their tongues stuck firmly up Micro$haft's fuindamental orifice.

Escept that you are not paying for the software. Only the license to

Bait and switch. All web sites and brick & mortar stores say "software",
not "licenses". To show you what a sport I can really be, however, how
about "Microsoft says jump through these hoops before you can use the
license you've paid for and most of the users ask 'how high?'"

Better now?

So then, you are incapable of actually offering any substantial assistance
to anyone in these newsgroups. Your stock answer is to use Linux.

These groups were not conceived to be chat rooms. They are HELP groups. If
someone just wants to chat there are numerous other places where they can
go.
