I've seen several references to the subject product here, indicating that,
unlike Partition Magic, ADD properly sees and can deal with Vista
partitions?

I was about to purchase ADD 10, but asked their rep if ADD 10 supports Vista
and got the response:

"There is no Vista support at this time".

So what is the experience?

Can ADD 10 be installed in / work from within Vista, or will it work only if
installed from XP and then can see/manipulate a Vista partition on the same
machine?

True Image 10 does work with Vista, i'm using it now. Director,
unfortunately, doesn't currently work with Vista, but it will work with a
dual boot system from windows XP.

Don't dual boot XP and Vista unless you can hide the Vista partitions from
XP's VSS driver, volsnap.sys. If you don't you will lose Vista's VSS files,
such as system restore points, every time you boot XP (except in Safe Mode).

Colin i decided to hide the Vista partition from XP and, having used Vista
for a week or so, had accumulated quite a few restore points. Then i had to
use the Windows XP operating system to update the sophos anti virus. Imagine
my surprise whne i rebooted to Vista to find that all of the system restore
points had been erased. Maybe it's just my PC, but i don't think hiding the
Vista partition from XP is a reliable way of preventing the loss of system
restore points.

Thanks for updating us. That's bad news. I guess the general advice has to
be not to dual boot Vista and XP. Perhaps Disk Director just needs more
work. As a work around, I don't suppose Sophos runs in Safe Mode, does it?
Safe Mode does not harm the Vista files.

You may need to set a Vista restore point manually to get SR going again.

Colin, I have hidden the Vista partition from XP on my dual boot, but i have
noticed that when i go back to using windows XP and then reboot to Vista the
restore points always disappear. I'm beginning to wonder if hiding the Vista
partition is a satisfactory way of preventing the loss of Vista restore
points. I haven't yet tried bitlocker so i'm not sure whether this will be a
suitable alternative for those using premium and ultimate versions of vista.

Those in the TechBeta who used BitLocker were able to avoid the problem.
Disk Director may not be working right with Vista yet. Hiding the partition
will work. The problem is doing it. After the holidays do you plan on
asking Acronis about this? I have the Acronis software too, through the
same program you do, but I have not used the Disk Director.

To hide the partition i used TweakUI from the XP partition (obviously
tweakui will not install on vista). This was by far the simplest way of
hiding the partitions. Of course disk director is not the only application
in my arsenal, so i'm not relying upon disk director to solely manage my
partitions. I have reviewed a lot of Paragon software on my xp website
http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org which has proved more than capable of
imaging, partitioning, extending, shrinking, hiding, etc. Unfortunately, at
the moment, Paragon does not support Vista, although Vista capable copies of
their software will be made available. I would probably imagine they would
start sending me copies of the Vista capable software sometime in january.

I can make enquiries at Acronis regarding Disk Director and see what they
have to say, but i would imagine a vista capable edition is not far off. in
which case the answer i get back will be more like 'watch this space' :-)

Thanks, all, for correcting me on True Image 10 and Vista. Meant 9.xx in my
original post, had not realized that 10 was available.

Colin: Your info on volsnap was indeed correct (as usual), as I had not been
using Vista system restore. Hiding the file is a problem, but found out
during a reinstall of a saved Vista backup, that the backup is also affected,
which resulted in a clean install. Simply stated - stay away from restore and
backup (files & etc) in Vista if using dual boot with XPx64 and XP.

Same problem with Ghost. Soon as you boot into XP the restore points are
wiped and you can't backup what isn't there.

I agree. I am staying very far away. In fact I am not dual booting XP and
Vista at all, except on my test box.

GOLDBEAR (aka DCR) added his two cents

As I stated in a previous post TweakUI installed on the XP partition will
allow you to 'hide' the vista partition. But, personally, i don't think
hiding the partition works. Again today i have had to use XP and, again,
after rebooting to Vista, the restore points on Vista have disappeared
again!

I don't know what to say. You are demostrating that hiding the drive is not
sufficient. However, during TechBeta the testers found out that using a
boot manager like BootItNG http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ did work and
using BitLocker also worked, but nothing else did. Your findings are
terribly important, that's for sure.

Then perhaps the problem lies with the Vista boot menu? I'm certainly not
using BootItNG i'm only using the standard windows dual boot menu. But, as i
say, boot to XP and then back to Vista and 'boom' all restore points
disappear.

As i have a copy of Acronis Disk Director on my XP drive, i might use
TweakUI to 'unhide' the partition and then use Disk Director to hide it and
see if that makes any difference. I don't think it will, but i'll give it a
try.

Colin i bugged, like many other, the problem of disappearing restore points
during the beta test ( and this was bugged on every single build) . All i
got in reply was 'this will not be fixed'

Okay, they haven't fixed it, but i believe Microsoft have a duty to the
people who buy Vista to provide a work around fort hose that dual boot. Not
everyone can afford Enterpise and Ultimate, so they can forget Bitlocker.
What people need is a solid, realiable, workaround that works; not something
that's hit or miss! Is anyone from Microsoft listening? I doubt it!

I am surprised that you are seeing the standard menu. I remember from
Partition Magic that it had its own. I haven't used a boot manager in four
or five years, though, so what do I know.

In reading page 93 of the Disk Director 10 manual it is not clear to me that
the option to hide an OS hides operating systems from each other. It looks
like it is an option to remove an entry from the menu for some other reason,
such as hiding from other users, etc. Can you check this out?
