To increase the speed and reduce the bloat of AR6, make sure the
splash screen is disabled (edit>preferences>starup) and do the what is
outlined here [inserted below for convience --IC]. Doing this makes AR6
workable for me.

WARNING: USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Install Adobe Reader 6 (only if you want to )

From the Start->Run windows menu, Open the "x:\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader" folder, where x is the right drive
letter.

Find the plug_ins folder and rename it plug_ins_disabled

Create a new folder named plug_ins

Copy the following files from "plug_ins_disabled" to "plug_ins":
EWH32.api, printme.api, and search.api

Of course this will limit the functionality to viewing non-encrypted pdf
files. You might want to experiment leaving some of the fat in, I mean,
.API files, like reflow.api and search5.api (if it's there), and see how
it affects functionality and load times.

With the files listed, you get half the load time on low-end systems,
and a 2-sec load time on high-end ones.

There is a folder already created just for that called Optional.

This is such an awesome tip. Thank you!

A truly stupendous tip. ;o)

Thanks to you too.

Okay, I assume the things you put/leave in "plug_ins" will be loaded
automagically while you twiddle your thumbs and the things you put in
"Optional" will NOT be loaded unless you specifically invoke them
somehow individually as required?

I think that's right. I don't think there's a way of specifically invoking
plugins that are in the optional folder.

But it still doesn't do spreadsheets.

I'm still using V4.0 and have not yet come across any pdf files it can't
read. It includes the option to export to text or html files, which I
believe is missing on later versions (I may be wrong about this).

If it works, what's the problem? I have observed that Acrobat takes
longer and longer to load with each advancing version. Long ago, I
got fed-up and installed GhostView. Half the installed bytesize, and
twice as rapid to display .PDF files.

Tempting, if it weren't so barebones-lookin'. (Or maybe that's just how it
looks.) Currently, I use Acrobat 5. I have 6 installed too, but I don't
use it (too slow to open).

I hear that Acrobat Reader 6.0 is real bloatware and should be
avoided. I was told to use a previous version.

Which one is best?. Version 5.05? Or the newer version 5.1?
