I hear that Acrobat Reader 6.0 is real bloatware and should be avoided. I
was told to use a previous version.

Which one is best?. Version 5.05? Or the newer version 5.1?

Rob

4.5?

Depends on what you want to read. Older versions cannot read the newer
PDF versions. There was a new Reader for each PDF version.

Therefore, I would try 5.1 first, if that is still to slow try 5.05.
Also, there was a trick to make 6.0 faster posted some time ago, but I
cannot remember nor find it right now.

5.1 works fine for me and doesn't have the bloat of 6.0.

I use Acrobat Reader 4.05. If you want it and can't find it, I can
upload it for you. I can't remember the last time I came across a pdf
document I couldn't read.

I may be wrong about this, but I think newer version pdf documents can
be read by older version readers, but some things may not display
correctly. Anybody know the details?

The other thing is that more people are growing wise to this ploy of
outdating software and save files in older version compatible form.
They do not want to alienate those with older versions.

This may be a little different than the way Internet Browsers get
outdated, as all the creator of a document has to do is "Save As" a
version X compatible document.

By contrast, while using/experimenting with AcroRead v3.01 I did come
across a lot of stuff I couldn't read.

To increase the speed and reduce the bloat of AR6, make sure the
splash screen is disabled (edit>preferences>starup) and do the what is
outlined here [inserted below for convience --IC]. Doing this makes AR6
workable for me.

WARNING: USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Install Adobe Reader 6 (only if you want to )

From the Start->Run windows menu, Open the "x:\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader" folder, where x is the right drive
letter.

Find the plug_ins folder and rename it plug_ins_disabled

Create a new folder named plug_ins

Copy the following files from "plug_ins_disabled" to "plug_ins":
EWH32.api, printme.api, and search.api

Of course this will limit the functionality to viewing non-encrypted pdf
files. You might want to experiment leaving some of the fat in, I mean,
..API files, like reflow.api and search5.api (if it's there), and see how
it affects functionality and load times.

With the files listed, you get half the load time on low-end systems,
and a 2-sec load time on high-end ones.

Mine reads 4.0, it opens (so far) any pdf file I run across.

Many thanks for all the info. By the way, you can still get the old version
of Acrobat Reader on the acrobat web site at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html

But I find it hard to tell the differences between the versions. ie what is
added in version 5 vs version 4. etc. Does anyone know where I can find
this info?

5 has graphic selection. 4 does not. Good for selecting a graphic without
printing the whole page. This has been a useful feature for me.
Except for a different look, I have not discovered what features 6 has that
5 does not.

I've got installed 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x. I found that 2x can deal with virtually
nothing. And 3x, limited, as you note. I don't remember any problems with
4x renderings, but prefer the added selection tools in 5x. (Re 6x install,
no way.)

One of the important things with an Adobe install is to change the defaults,
and disable most of the plugins. Some choices therein might be different
for someone who actually likes dealing with PDF documents, though. For me,
I just like to get a .pdf looked at as quickly as possible, to find what
to export, then be out of there.

Stick with 4.

Sometimes I get an error when I double click on the file but if I drag it
into Acrobat 4 it opens fine.

From the website at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/acrrwhatsnew.html , here are the new
features in version 6:

"Now you can:

Play back QuickTime (Macintosh and Windows®) as well as Macromedia® FlashT,
Real, and Windows Media-formatted content (Windows only) that is embedded in
an Adobe PDF file

Read and organize high-fidelity eBooks

Extract photos from Adobe Photoshop Album slide shows and electronic cards,
and send them to online photo services for ordering prints, photo albums,
greeting cards, and more (online photo services vary regionally)

View document layers in Adobe PDF files created with layers preserved

Print Adobe PDF files from wireless devices at locations offering the EFI
PrintMe Network*

Receive product updates easily using the enhanced Product Updater

Plus, you can still view electronic slide shows and electronic cards created
in Photoshop Album and, if the PDF file was created using Adobe Document
Server for Reader Extensions, digitally sign documents. In addition,
Asian-language font support that enables you to view Adobe PDF files that
contain Chinese, Japanese, and Korean download-on-demand fonts on nonnative
systems is now built into Adobe Reader."

Now I understand why it is so bloated! I prefer using the separate adobe
ebook reader program to read ebooks. I don't need to see flash etc imbedded
in PDF files. And I don't need to order prints using Acrobat Reader. I
will stay away from this bloatware!

I'm still using V4.0 and have not yet come across any pdf files it can't
read. It includes the option to export to text or html files, which I
believe is missing on later versions (I may be wrong about this).
