But if you re-read what you said above which was "Re-install the 4in1
(but just the AGP driver - sometimes DX9 or MS buggered it up". That
would appear to me like you mean just install the AGP driver from the 4
in 1 package. If I am mistaken as to what you meant, what did the part
you said about "but just the AGP driver" refer to?

Mary

Mary, that was number 3. You have to do numbers 1 and 2 first. Number 1
takes care of your minport, usb etc. Number 3 is just a safeguard to ensure
the DX installation didn't corrupt anything.

Mary said:
But didn't it say on the 5.2 page that the drivers can be used for
Radeon 9000 series. It seemed more suited to Radeon 900 Pro than AIW,
because it mentions that for AIW drivers, all the information you need
is not on version 5.2. Thats what I took out of it.

Mary

Yes, You are correct. Download it and install it.

OK, I have never done it that way before, but thats ok. Live and learn.
I think I know now what you mean. You mean install the entire 4 in 1
package first, then DirectX, then install the AGP only part of the 4 in
1 drivers? I hope I got it right now? I couldn't figure out the reason
you would install the AGP driver again when you installed it the first
time. Thats why I couldn't understand what you meant. Do you find that
reinstalling the AGP part of the 4 in 1 drivers can be of benefit, as
you say in case MS or DX install their AGP driver? I wouldn't have
thought of doing that.

I'll have to see. I haven't done anything yet. I have some things to do
on the computer and once I start fiddling around with uninstalling and
installing drivers, it doesn't always work out successfully the first
time and I don't want my computer messed up for now.

Exactly. I had probs with VIA and this tip (which someone in here gave me)
worked. It may not work for your problem of course but as it's a ten minute
job it's worth a try. Dont forget the reboots at every stage.

I will try it next time and see what happens if anything. I wouldn't say
that reinstalling just the AGP part of 4 in 1 drivers would take ten
minutes, more like 3 minutes :)

I notice when I just checked ATI site that Catalyst 5.2 came out 2/9/05
so is a lot newer than the Catalyst 4.2 , 4.3 drivers and says its for
Win 98 and WinME (says older video drivers for win 98 are all under
winME now). I wonder if I should have tried 5.2 drivers. It also said on
the same page as 5.2 drivers, something about "different varations are
available for Radeon AIW. I just have Radeon, not AIW.

Woops, sorry you dont need the capture or mmc software then.

It really (really) sounds like your not corectly doing the uninstall part of this. You display driver should be the
standard windows vga driver at the time your installing the ATI drivers. That means you should only be seeing VGA
quality desktop.

There is a ATI uninstall utility at there site alsi if that helps. Might have to look around for it.

D) USING wme-8-03-98-3-050117a-021000e.exe

Overview

There are two phases to the installation of a driver that has been downloaded from the ATI WEB site.

The first phase occurs when you run the wme-8-03-98-3-050117a-021000e.exe program.

This phase creates a temporary directory on the system disk and unpacks all the individual files that make up the ATI
software bundle.

In the second phase the ATI SETUP program is launched from the temporary directory created in the first phase. ATI SETUP
installs the software (from the temporary directory) into the operating system.

Steps

a) You must download wme-8-03-98-3-050117a-021000e.exe and save it to a directory on your systems hard disk.
For example C:\temp is a common directory used to initially save a file into.

b) Once you have downloaded wme-8-03-98-3-050117a-021000e.exe,
- Close all programs
- Click the START button and select the RUN menu item.
- Click the BROWSE button.
- Browse to the directory where wme-8-03-98-3-050117a-021000e.exe was saved.
- Select wme-8-03-98-3-050117a-021000e.exe and click OK to run the program.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.

! The individual files will be unpacked and placed into a directory on your hard disk. The default path for this
directory is C:\ATI\support\wme-8-03-98-3-050117a-021000e\

! After copying the files to the hard disk the INSTALLATION program will launch. You may choose to abort the INSTALL
process at this point. (If you abort, no software will be installed into Windows.)

Oh OK. But if you are including installing the video drivers, that can
take a long time, if
something either didn't get installed properly, or some video drivers
were not uninstalled or who knows what. I know, its happened to me a few
times.

Mary

I may try version 5.2 but since my system is working ok for now, but has
some double tabs in display/advanced, it needs to be fixed, so I will
fix it soon. I may not have done the last uninstall properly. I already
have the uninstall utility and have uninstalled and installed lots of
times. But this last time didn't work quite right. Thanks for the
information.
