Have you tried each one on its own on an 80 conductor cable?

What make of DVD drives and what make Hard drives?
Any Maxtors, any DeskStars?

DVD-ROM is an Aopen 16x drive
DVD-RW is a new MSI

Primary Master hard disk is a Fujitsu 60GB
Primart Slave (the new disk) is a Seagate 120GB
