JunkMonkey said:Odd! My version doesn't have any nagging. Well, the only thing it
does do is briefly display a picture of the PowerDesk Pro 5 box when
I exit the program, and it did let me know a more powerful version
was available at registration time. So I guess technically those are
nags, but I can live with them as they don't get in the way and
require no ongoing response on my part.
This version came as a freebie in my SystemSuite 5 package, but I
can't believe they would make a special nag free version for just SS5
users especially if they haven't changed the feature set from the
download for free version. I might suggest that if you tried an
earlier version of PowerDesk (say, when owned by OnTrack) that you
reconsider it.
By the way, the sale of OnTrack's Utilities programs to V-Com was a
good thing for the consumer and the ongoing health of the programs
themselves. V-Com is much more dynamic than OnTrack ever was.

The PowerDesk 5 (indefinite trial) download and PD5 in SystemSuite 5 are the
same: both have a brief dissolving graphic when closed. Or at least
installing SS5 (found free after rebate recently) didn't change the behavior
of my PD5. While I wish the nag were not present, it is close enough for me
since I don't have to do anything except hold my eyes closed for two seconds
(which is good for them anyway).
As for the purchase by V-Com, SS5 does _not_ include PD5 Pro. SS3 and SS4
(IIRC -- I didn't buy 4) under On-Track included the Pro versions. Hardly a
step forward.
Note, the PDx Pro viewer depends on QuickView / QuickView Plus modules. MS
bundled some of those with Win3.1/WfWG and Win95, but not WinNT/2k/XP. I'm
not sure about Win98/ME. I think anyone with a copy of QV+ can integrate it
with PD5 to have most of the features of PD5 Pro. Those interested in QV+
will find most of the common conversions available in PD5 Pro for much less
money
V-Com has also marketed it much less aggressively (in the US) than OnTrack
and Mijenix (the prior owners). Mijenix was the innovator (remember the
advent of Zip Magic?). OnTrack added corporate $ and retail muscle and
tried to compete with Norton and the now defunct McAfee suites.
(Quarterdeck was folded into Norton, not SS)
Futhermore, I'm not sure what is going to happen in the future with PD and
SS. V-Com does not own the entire suite (didn't buy it all; immediately
sold part of it). That is really too bad since for awhile SS was better
than its competition, especially on NT based OSs. PD 5 is better than PD 4
(ignoring the lost viewer), but has still not been thoroughly updated. Like
Norton SystemSuite and its componenets, long file name support is _not_
designed in and many screens are optimized for 640x480 viewing and are not
resizable (except sometimes, somewhat via 3rd party hacks like ResizeEnable
or the latest WireKeys), etc. Oh well.
