I find My Computer/My documents not an ideal File Manager.

In the past I used to use various versions of Xtree which were excellent
file managers but no longer operational on XP.
Is there a similar program available for XP available

Try 2xExplorer -- it's free.

\Should\ be in this group. :-) Check out xplorer^2, its successor, too.
It's only in alpha, but works pretty well.

I use Freecommander:

Main features in freeCommander :

- dual-panel technology
- optional tree view for each panel
- built in file viewer to view files in hex, binary, text or image
format
- file viewer inside archives too
- built in archive handling: ZIP (read, write), CAB (read, write), RAR
(read) (archives handled like folders!)
- nested archive handling
- easy access to system folders, control panel, desktop and start menu
- copy, move, delete, rename files and folders
- file splitting
- file properties and context menu
- calculation of folder size
- folder comparison / synchronization
- modification of file date and attributes
- folder / program favorites
- file searching (inside archive too)
- file filters for display
- DOS command line

Cool!

I tried Freecommander but couldn't figure out how to access the control
panel or the desktop, so I'll stay with 2xExplorer.

Evil is just live, spelt backwards.

DualXplorer is new but shows a lot of promise:

Via the toolbar.

From the makers of XTree, google for ZTreeWin.

V-Com's Power Desk 5 is available for free for download from V-COM
here
is the website that compares the "pro" version with the free version:

http://www.v-com.com/product/pd_compare_pro.html

The free version came with System Suite 5, and I find I use it more and
more. It works with virtually any Windows OS.

Here is the address for the actual download:

Thanks JunkMonkey for your info, too. I have also tried Power Desk.
It's an excellent file manager, but I got tired of the nagging to buy the
Pro version.
I'm content with 2xExplorer and no nagging.

Odd! My version doesn't have any nagging. Well, the only thing it does do
is briefly display a picture of the PowerDesk Pro 5 box when I exit the
program, and it did let me know a more powerful version was available at
registration time. So I guess technically those are nags, but I can live
with them as they don't get in the way and require no ongoing response on my
part.

This version came as a freebie in my SystemSuite 5 package, but I can't
believe they would make a special nag free version for just SS5 users
especially if they haven't changed the feature set from the download for
free version. I might suggest that if you tried an earlier version of
PowerDesk (say, when owned by OnTrack) that you reconsider it.

By the way, the sale of OnTrack's Utilities programs to V-Com was a good
thing for the consumer and the ongoing health of the programs themselves.
V-Com is much more dynamic than OnTrack ever was.

It's not freeware. Therefore, it's not an appropriate recommendation.

Sorry. My bad. I didn't catch the alt.comp.freeware crosspost 'till now.
I apologise.
