I ran for a few days with a generic 300W, seemed okay but I upgraded anyway.
Yeah, a few days is fine, but you were probably running that psu at full
belt and so if it turned into a few weeks it would more than likely blow up.

been runing a 9700pro with a antec smart power 350 for around 1 year.
Which is a far cry from a generic 300w or a 250w like the OP was asking
about, but even 350w is running pretty close to the metal.........I doubt if
you add up all your parts that you are under what the 12v rail pumps out,
you really should upgrade that psu..

Close to the max? Thats way over mate on the 12v rail, you are
extremely lucky that nice little setup didn't go bang....I suspect it
probably is ready to go too.....
Do people never work out wattages anymore or what? It isn't just about
maximum output you have to work out how much on each rail etc etc.
Jees, just the whole output alone of your systrem requires 418w!!!

OK, for those of us who are stupid, could you go through your
calculation? I'm not at all clear on where one gets the numbers for
those components.

i forgot to include all the crap i have in computer its realy pushing the
smart power 350 wat.

one thing i did was take the 2nd fan on the powersuply and conected it to
run full time not just when it gets hot. keeping the powersuply cool help.

Works just fine with an Alienware 340 Watt PS....

For how long though? I wouldn't ev en dream of using anything under 400w
trhese days, too much power hungry parts around :)

dont know why. but the powersuply has held up damn good for the 2 years i
have had it. i have had the 9700 in it for a year.
here is what its at right now with out raid card and the 2 ,40 gig drives.

Vcore 1.70
VTT 1.55
+3.3v 3.28
+5V 4.97
+12v 11.94
-12v -1194
5VSB 5.2
VBAT 3.12

guess i got lucky with the powersuply.
and your right i havent even added up the power draw of all the junk.

I have been running one on a 300W generic for over a year with no
problems. This is while playing Morrowind for 12+ hours at a time. I
also do file filtering or importing that takes over an hour with the CPU
at 100%.

Well, i have my Enermax 365 Watt, with adjustable fan, which is running with
no problems ...

It's running a P4 2,6C @ 250 MHz FSB, an Ati radeon 9700, 3 scsi optical
drives, 3 SCSI HDD's (serious buggers ;-) ), 11 fans divided over my PC
(inclusing the two of the PSU, and two in the optical drives), sound card,
adaptec scsi card, USB shit like a scanner... well, you name it :-) Als
quite stable voltage lines, rock solid till i installed the Cat 3.6 / 3.7
:-)

I had picked up a 9700 Pro locally, had a Newegg order to put in so I
figured I should upgrade my PS. Of course I couldn't hold off on trying out
the 9700. Turns out it was fine and I probably spent $80 for nothing. Oh
well, I guess I'm set for awhile.

Well, does a power station run at 100% all the time? :)

Are power stations rated to their absolute maximum, do not pass under any
circumstance, point? Or do you think there is a tolerance there?
