oh ok - well in a bit of a predicament. I have smart FTP and also the standard freeUK upload FTP page thing but i dont know quite how to do it

I think your best bet would be to do a google search for newbie web design or something similar. Learn some basic code, which is exceptionally simple to do, then go at it with a program like Front Page or Dreamweaver. I've been using Dreamweaver for a couple years now and once you get past the little learning curve then its rather simple to use. Plus, if you add a program like Fireworks or Flash to the mix, you can make cool looking sites with all sorts of bells and whistles pretty easily.
