Right. One-city (Culver City, California) only, available to see. Nice &
colorful, if one enjoys California.

It's great.... errr, if you love California and happen to live un the city
it's meant for. Otherwise, it's pretty much useless and _far_ from being
"the best ever".

Try including the weather for all cities/countries, and I may be persuaded
to take it seriously.

It found Cambridge, England but continued to show the Californian
weather. ATM it's a dud.

click the window caption twice to search for additional cities.

it found 'hamburg', but it didnt find 'kiel' - the city i live in.

Yep, a bit counter intuitive but it found London, Sheffield and Leeds
in the UK. It missed a couple of smaller cities I tried and then I
stopped.
It would be interesting to know how large the db is in such a small
app, or is it phoning somewhere? I must try it on my firewalled
machine.

That's better (not explained elsewhere)! :-)

Or I could just launch Sygate here...

In order to launch, the app must contact http://www.cyberark.net/
which is really, really odd.

Life is to short for me to even try to understand some of this stuff.

According to Ethereal, it looks like it's doing a version check.
Here's the TCP stream:

---begin---
GET /data/ver.txt HTTP/1.1
User-Agent: dl/0.9
Host: www.cyberark.net
Cache-Control: no-cache

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Connection: close

If you want to check whether or not your city is supported before
downloading the program, then you can check
http://weather.cnn.com/weather/ which is what XWeather uses to
download information about a certain city.

[snip]

You double-click the top bar, then type in your city hit enter, and if they
have more than one city listed it becomes a drop-down box. Sometimes, the
entry box will appear and disappear right as I double-click it. However the
two cities I looked for in the UK they had: London, and Derby.

The application has promise, but it keeps popping up in the middle of the
screen, has a pointless animation, and has crashed on me once.

It needs work.

http://weather.cnn.com/weather/ which is what XWeather uses to
download information about a certain city.

It is actually retrieving the weather information form cnn, so if you
don't find your fav city, blame cnn :)
When there is a new version, it will automatically update itself: load
the new one, then kill the old one, and replace the old one on HD with
the new one.
The default start up position is middle of the screen, and each time
it updates the info, the position is reenforced (not exactly by
design). It will shrink to tray when off focus for a while. Mouse over
different places and you will then find some hidden features.
More feedback please, thanks!

How exquisitely much better for freeware it would be if ...
the program came built-in with a search link for getting its
needed data from .. wherever, CNN, WeatherChannel, etc,
*instead* of phoning home. The program does NOT work
unless you permit it to phone home. It could have been
authored to do the same thing by its standalone self. Also,
it must make registry or other data files, since it remembers
where you wanted data for.

It is.
*instead* of phoning home.

The two seem to perform separate functions...the phoning home seems
to be solely related to updates, whereas everything to do with the
actual weather is done completely independent of the author's
website.
The program does NOT work unless you permit it to phone home.

Not entirely correct. You can use your hosts file to direct
www.cyberark.net to some other IP...it doesn't matter which IP, as
long as there is a web server. Also, you can go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\MyWeather\cnn

in the registry and change the URL key to something else as well.
Setting it to http://www.google.com will try to download the file
http://www.google.com/data/ver.txt (which doesn't exist) at startup,
and when that fails the program will still retrieve and update the
weather.
It could have been authored to do the same thing by its standalone
self.

It does. The only thing it appears to contact cyberark.net for is
update info.
Also, it must make registry or other data files, since it
remembers where you wanted data for.

It appears to store the info in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\MyWeather\cnn

All that's stored is the primary city (the city which you choose),
secondary cities (other cities you choose, but which are only listed
when you move your mouse over the current conditions or towards the
upper left of the window) and the URL key, which I mentioned before.

All-in-all, it has some promise, and nothing malicious or personal
seems to be done, but automatic update and replace does make me a
little weary. Also, the lack of ability to show the temperature in
the tray (like Weather Watcher, Weather Bug, Weather Pulse, etc do) is
a fairly big thing for me as well. Also, I'm not a big fan of cutesy,
non-native-looking programs, and that animated bird, or insect, or
whatever is very annoying. For now, I think I'll stick with Weather
Watcher...

If you like, I can give you the module I wrote (to store the settings in an
ini file instead of the registry)........?

It does show temp/ and one or two word wx summary, when you move mouse over
tray icon. FWIW Dept. I've tried it and decided it's a nice resource-friendly
app, and am going to keep it.

Yeah! That would make this a better behaving program. Storing settings in
the registry is messy if you ever uninstall. Plus if it's stored in an ini
file you can copy the folder over to another computer and have all the
settings loaded automatically!
