3K budget

Yes if only we knew the answer to that!

If only we knew if its possible to fold space ;)

People like the rush of dismantling and rebuilding a system, I know I certainly like to spend an entire day at time totally stripping my rigs to clean and 'grease em' up to speak. Then rebuild them. Hours really do rush past and before you now it you aint eaten all day and you were supposed to go shopping for your dear old granny but forgot about it ;)

On a more serious note; Because it total fun, and if your a hobby is computers then it is totally satisfying to see multitude of componants to come together in one package and work flawlessly.

To put it as a metaphore almost as satisfying as a total stranger telling you she has just had a multiple orgasm with you for the first time in her life ;)

As others have said 3K's a lot to spend.

But if you want the best kit then yes go for it

I built this system in February of 2000 I believe (gosh, its been so long) And it still runs like a Champ! How fast does it really need to be? All you really need to update over the next 5 years is RAM, maybe HDD, Video Card and maybe a Sound Card.. I'm sure you'll pickup a new compact disc writer (DVDR,CDRW,Etc)

My system is as follows
2x AMD MP Palomino 1.2Ghz Socket-A 266Mhz FSB
2x PC2100 DDR Registered ECC 256Mb 184Pin DIMM 2.5V CL=2.5 32x72 (CT3272Y265)
1x TYAN Thunder K7 S2462 Dual Athlon MP Motherboard (S2462UNG)
NMB (SD025A460WSW) 460W Power Supply for AMD Althon MP/Palomino Motherboards
** That power supply died recently, purchased some $68 580watt EaglePro or something like that, had to pickup a ATX-to-GES pinout converter for it, but it works great. **
1x Quantum ATLAS 10K 36GB Ultra160 SCSI 10,000Rpm 68Pin Wide HDD
LiteOn 48x24x48 CDRW ATA100
LiteOn 16x DVD Reader ATA100
ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV 64mb
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum EX (70SB009003001)
AOC 9KLR 19in 1600x1200 @75Hz .25mm PureFlatTube CRT Monitor (SPECTRUM9KLR)
GWC KS-104 4-Port KVM Switch
Epson Stylus Photo 820 (C11C417001) USB/Par/Firewire 2880 x 720 dpi
Perfection 1650 Scanner (B11B146021) 1,600 x 3,200 dpi 48-bit color

I'm about due for a new Video Card.. Maybe some more RAM.. Been thinking about replacing the 1600MP's with 2200MP's(?) But other than that.. this thing runs anything I throw at it.

@viroid: Hi,

my NMB psu died, too. I figured out the R25 resistor near the big condenser was completely blown. I'd like to replace it, but because it literally vapourated, I have no idea, what the rating for it was. If you still have the old NMB psu, could you please take a look at it and send me the colour code on the R25? Then I 'd be able to repair the thing. Thanks in advance.

Marc

There is a reason this Resistor blew. Dont just replace it and expect the problem not to happen again!!

Marc, I'd really like to help ya out there, but I trashed it after I got this new one working. I tried and tried to find a replacement NMB but only afew people even list them on their website and it was like $140.. but they didnt have any in stock. I picked up a SkyHawk GM570PC (570watt PSU) for like $65 dollars, I did however require a ATX to GES converter for my TYAN 2462UGN Mobo, which I grabbed from electroseller.com

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi to all,
thanks for your kind reply.
Yes, the reason for blowing up the resistor was not knowing, that there are two different versions of EPS, the EPS and the AMD sort of EPS. So I wanted to try one of the other mobos and conected it to the NMB, well, it was quite impressive: Smoke aroused from the case and that was it...

So I looked around on the web for explanation and, heureka, found out about the differences. Alas, a little bit too late...

Then I tried to locate another NMB psu, but they ceased operation two years ago and obviously did not keep anything, no wiring diagrams, nothing. That's really going out of business...

Viroid, thanks for reply, it was just a try.

I will get another EPS and, this time, a converter cable, following your advice. Just to save money, you know...

Thanks again to all.

Marc

Btw., the system itself is really running fine, or at least, was running fine without any problems.

First question is, how much up front money will you have to spend. 3k is ridiculously easy to spend on a system. But since its over 2 years, the system items cant really be Itemized until you have a starting budget and some idea of when the rest comes. 3k up front and you'll hit 750fps on Counter-strike: CZ which would definitely last you the 5 years. I'd spend a lil less and then upgrade a lil later on.

Here is what you need:

http://www.alienware.co.uk/Configur...sCode=PC-EU-AURORA-ALX-R6&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULThttp://www.alienware.co.uk/Product_Pages/desktop_all_default.aspx

This will last you a while before your next upgrade.

I want to work on spending 3K in the next 2 years on computer components that will last me 5 years at least (or as damn near it, a big ask in computer life i know) .
What motherboard, processor, memory, graphics card will allow it ??..I know i will have to invest in Blue ray !! but what about the rest? there must be some hardware or peripherals that are years ahead of their time.

Of course. Even with £3K, you're limited.

To buy Alienware would buy you an inferior machine to one you could assemble yourself.
