33.8? GB limitation

Donna,
This is the link to lomita_bios.zip. Frankly, I woudn't go ahead with that
BIOS flash. Once again, Seagate's 40GB is recognized properly, the
motherboard is quite new, HP site doesn't have any BIOS upgrades for the
Pavilion 531w model etc etc etc.
You can clip (double jumper) the HDD and, probably, get more than 32GB
capacity recognized, but less than 120GB in any case. Ontrack Manager aka
Data Lifeguard is not an option in the long run.
The best solution might be exchanging WD disk with any other brand disk and
upgrade/purchase a motherboard/IDE adapter later .

Hi Jetro,
After I wrote to you last night, I did lots of reading on this Flash BIOS
thing. Well the more I read, I decided it was best not to even attempt that
route.
So I shut the PC down and unattached my Seagate 40 GB and ran the
installation on the WD 120. I set the jumper to Single drive. All went well.
I then reconnected the Seagate and made it Master and the WD Slave and all
is fine. Really the only different thing I did was change the jumper
settings. I was using the Cable Select before. I now have lots of hard disk
space and all this.
C:\ 37.2 GBs <this is my original 40 GB Seagate drive

E:\ 9.4 GBs
F:\ 30.7 GBs
G:\ 30.7 GBs
H:\ 32.5 GBs
I:\ 8.31 GBs
= 111.61 GBs total on my WD
I would have liked for them to be a little more uniform in size, but heck,
"It's working"
Thanks for ALL of your help with this. Now I can get back to my genealogy.

Donna,
Atta girl ;-)
Being involved in that ping-pong chat I didn't want you even touch the
jumpers, I'm sorry.
Does your genealogy fit the disks now? :^D

Jetro,
Oh yes, my genealogy fits perfect. I have one of the 30.7 GBs set up for
just that. I have so much information. Lot's of information that would have
taken me years to recover if I would have lost it. It's like one huge puzzle
and it's real interesting too. It had to be so rough back then. We have so
many luxuries today compared to just 50-60 years ago.
As for the jumpers, that's nothing. I have become a pro with this lately.
I have really learned so much but there is still all kinds of information
out there. I'm just so relieved that I'm back on track now. Still have a few
kinks to work out. But nothing like before. Can't thank you enough.

I would set the drives in Master/Slave and see if that works. Is this the secondary drive? If so, format from within XP as an NTFS drive and forget about the WD utility.

Hi Harv,
Got it all set up now. That's what I did, Master/Slave. I had originally
had it on Cable select. I disconnected my original drive and set the new one
up. Then I connected both HDs and like I said switched to Master/Slave and
it works great. I don't recommend using the WD utility at all. It gave me
plenty of headaches.
Just a few little tweaks . :-)
Thanks,
Donna J.

Great! I'm glad you're up and running
The WD utility has given me plenty of headaches too

Hi

This is problem with the older BIOS. They have a limitation on how big the hard drive can be. I recomend that you look for an update to your BIOS. Check with the manufacturer of the system

Hi, I have looked for an upgrade on my BIOS and with the help of Jetro
from another newsgroup, he found me an upgrade. But before I worked up the
nerve to actually flash the BIOS. I rearranged a few settings, installed
WINXP on my new hard drive and everything is fine now.
Thanks for the reply,
Donna J.
