3 years and dead?

Update:

Unplugged every PCI card that wasnt essential.

Unplugged everything from the back except power, monitor, keyboard, mouse

Still nothing.

Should a PSU make a kind of high pitched noise when it has power to it? not something you would hear over the fans... but audiable close up?
Chris - you probably remember I have the same PSU - you recommended it to me  - mine doesn't have that noise, and nor do any of my other PSU's.....

Had my computer PAT tested just a week ago aswell... all was perfect.

There's a clue.

The wrong test can kill a computer.

Who tested it? And which test did they apply?

Only test on computers should be low current insulation and visual.

And all a PAT test does is test safety. It will not check for working parts or detect failing components.

The stickers have "Project Solver LTD" written on them... so i guess thats the company?

The serial number for the computer sticker is 888693 - but i doubt that means anything.

I walked in to my room one day to see a guy with a big handheld computer thing giving him readings. No idea what tests he was doing. Wasnt even so happy at the fact he, a 3rd party contractor, got the master key to get into my room when i wasnt there.

Reckon my PSU has blown up?

Hope not.

I recently PAT tested 2000 items at a local secondary school, including lots of computers.

Our stickers all had our company name, a barcode and a number so you're right, that info is no help.

We didn't test personal electrical goods, just stuff belonging to the school, but requirements may be different at your Uni.

This is the one I use, it's probably the one that fella had as well.

If he used the wrong test he could have passed 500 volts through your PSU, which certainly wouldn't have done it any good.

However, it's probably just a coincidence, thinking about it, otherwise there may have been instances of computer failure all over the site.

And, sorry to say, but on studying all the evidence, it does kinda point to the PSU. Do you not have a friend there with a desktop computer who would let you try using their PSU briefly?

Looks like the one he had pretty much, similar anyway.

How did he manage to test my computer, which was on, and not have to turn it off or anything then?

If i remember rightly, it was just how i left it? Might be wrong.

Might have to buy a new PSU then. Thats a bugger - its still in warranty i think... might have to look into that.

i think this is how i fixed one of my problems before... yea a new PSU is in order i think

Sorry to disagree with some of the peeps here but Hipers do whine or at least the new one I listened to the other day did. It's what put me off buying one.

Apologies for going slightly off topic

Your never gonna know for sure 'til you pull yer finger out and try another one and see :p

I transplanted my motherboad, CPU, RAM, Graphics and RAID Array into my sisters case and hooked it up to her 430w PSU.

Works.

Either it was the PSU, case, or something else but none of the above...
