Ppl dl new drivers in the hope for improvements, especially with all the
hype they surrounded this set with. The hype unfortunatly was so heavey that
the drivers when released were a let down for many. In the future I truely
hope they cut back on hyping stuff. If they had just said oh we think you'll
like em this is whats coming instead of all the Hype that these were the
uber best wait n see crude I think alot less ppl would of been disapointed.

The best way for me to try and describe it is by example:
Car maker begins advertising new car will have great new usability features,
very useful etc come to our showroom when their out to see what, then when
it comes out its a regular car and still good but the new usability feature
is a second ashtray in the dash for passenger convienence and a vanity
mirror for both driver AND passenger thus its a letdown. Yes its a bit of
exageration but then again so was all the hype hehe

What I like the best, is the many posts that basically say "My system
was working perfectly, so I thought something needed to change". I
mean, I would guess there was a REASON for the upgrage in the first
place. I wonder if people think like that about things other than
computers? Do people take their car to a mechanic and say "It's
running GREAT, better rebuild the engine and replace the
transmission", or go to the Doctor and say "I'm feeling REAL GOOD, got
anything to change that?"

Weird, eh?

Think of it this way: every 3 months or 3000 miles you take your car
in to get the oil changed, right? Why? It was probably still running
great, right? The answer is preventative maintenance. Although I may
not play a game right now that doesn't work with earlier drivers, when
I DO decide to play one, I'd rather have the fix already in place
rather than _then_ having to deal with finding the updated drivers and
installing them. Granted, updating to the latest drivers isn't for
everyone, but I'm just giving a reason why many _do_ do it.

Apples and Oranges man, we all KNOW that oil doesn't last forever. If
what you are saying applies, wouldn't you be just as fine
re-installing the old driver over itself?
With all the hardware and software out there, it is inevitable that
there WILL be problems, that is a FACT. From what you are saying,
instead of CHECKING to see if a specific program has any problem, we
ASSUME it does, and update the drivers to try and fix it, knowing that
it COULD be running perfectly, and the FIX, could break it. Still the
question persists: If your system is running perfect, why update the
drivers?

No problems here with the 3.8's, on my ATI 9700 Pro, however I saw no
performance increase in 3dmark 2003.

Oh, btw, I heard the 3.8's added an overclocking option, should I remove
Rage3d tweak and just use it?

Experienced administrators at large sites even test the Windows security
patches before deploying them because they occasionally break something.

How mich of the hype was from ATI? I think it was basically us users that
got wind of a feature or two and hyped it. If you know the source of the
hype to be nVidia then provide a link, but I think you'll find most of it
was here or online forums where ATI don;t make an appearance.

Mmmm, new ATi Cat drivers! Must install! There's smoke coming from my
monitor! there's a dead mouse in there! New ATi Cat driver drove a mouse
into my monitor and caused it to blow up! It's all ATi's fault! Don't
install the new Cat drivers! Waaaaah!

The OC option only works on the 9600XT and 9800XT, not on earlier cards.
Stick with tweak.

WRONG! I have a 9500 pro and the OC works fine. But I am using the newest
omega drivers. The ATI drivers may be as he stated.

Who's WRONG? The ATI Catalyst 3.8 drivers do not overclock any non-XT cards.
Don't take my word for it, read the release notes at www.ati.com :
The new ATI OVERDRIVE (patent pending) tab, currently available for the
RADEONT 9800XT only, provides a safe and intelligent graphics processor
clocking utility. ATI OVERDRIVE is constantly monitoring the graphics
processor and pushing the graphics frequency to its maximum, while always
ensuring that the processor temperature stays at a safe level. If the
temperature of the graphics processor were to become too hot, ATI OVERDRIVE
automatically decreases the clock speed until a safe temperature is reached.
ATI OVERDRIVE never reduces the graphics processor speed below the pre-set
factory default clock speed.
