Here is another idea:
Download a copy of Knoppix.
It's a version of Linux that is completely self-contained on a CDROM,
no installation required. If your hard drive becomes unbootable, you just
boot off the Knoppix CD, and you can read all your FAT32 and NTFS files.
(Writing to the NTFS partition is not recommended.)
