Can someone give me an idea on how to speed up shutting down or re-starting
my system. I have XP Pro 2 GHz 480 RAM It is on a 20GB partition with 8.7GB
free space.
I have done all the spyware and antivirus checks with adaware, spy-bot, AVG,
Defender & worm checks.
It takes from the time I restart the PC until I can use it again between
8-12 minutes complete, that is about 6-10 minutes too long. It seems to hang
up shutting down on a pale blue screen with the mouse arrow on it & that's
all. I have not installed anything new for awhile, except new mouse
[wireless]
Any ideas?
Also How can I see all the messages in Outlook express 6 I can only download
1000 headers at a time so if there is two thousand messages I can only get
1000. I have to click on catch up to erase the number of mail left but I
cannot see them, Anything there either?
Thanks B
Thanks Bruce

Install UPHClean, that should help with the shutdown speed.

User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

After you have installed this shut down the pc then restart and check
the Event Viewer for errors and report any errors here.

Remember that having unnecessary applications and services start at boot
time can have a negative impact on the overall performance of the
computer, remove these unnecessary items from the startup routine.

As for OE I don't know, someone else will have to answer that.

In outlook express click tools, options, the read tab and change the number
of messages to download to whatever number you would like, then OK out.

Your other question was answered in another thread.

Thanks JoneDoe but I already tried that & 1000 is the maximum allowed at a
time. When I delete the 1000 though I cannot access the rest the only way
top get rid of them is to catch-up

The limit IS 1000, but you can get the next 1000 by just clicking 'Headers'
in the tool bar. Continue doing that until you have downloaded all the
header, then delete the older headers if you wish.

Some updates and patches have changed the behavior of Internet Explorer ver.
6; at one time you COULD set the number of new headers to fetch to more than
1000. The "work around" is just to click the 'Headers' button more than
once.

Uncheck the box for x number of headers in Tools> Options. Then you will
get all headers. In a very large group, this can take a while to complete.
Personally (when I used OE which hasn't been for a very long time), I would
just click on the "Get next 1000" in one of the OE menus until I had what I
wanted from that group.

Thanks Phil & Sharon never knew about the header button. I have been erasing
them for years now.

The Formula for 4 second is as follows.Go to desktop.Make a short folder.
type SHUTDOWN -s -t-01 click finish. This creater an icon but need to be
launched inQuicklaunch taskbar. one button click. You will get a message,
shutting down In 00.01 sec. After Doing this a couple of times the BIOS will
read the Executation. Delete the Icon. Don't abuse this method. But your
computer will shutdown in 4 to 7 seconds.Woz

What is a short folder? do you mean shortcut then drag to launchbar?
I tried that but doesn't work

Sounds like you have something in your msconfig bootup loads or in the Start
Up folder that is trying to load something that won't load and it is hanging
up your boot until it finally defaults out.

You might try F8 during your boot and see if you have a step by step bootup
option. Maybe that way you can find out what is hanging.

My bad, didn't proof edit B/4 i sent. Go to desktop. under make a new folder
is make a new short cut. Yes you drag and drop to the taskbar. here is the
formula again. I accidently put an extra dash on the original fomula. In the
shortcut window type: SHUTDOWN space-s space-t space 01,enter.Drag to
taskbar.Let me if this helps your problem. Woz

Click Start, click Run, and type regedit. Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control.

Click the Control folder.

Right click "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" and click Modify.

Set the value to 2. (Two tenths of a seconds)

I would think that some services may not have time to cleanup with such
a low setting?

John

What should the setting be then or should I set it
I took the advice of WOZ & it worked perfect after the editing of course, so
do I need anything else which is better.
Thanks everyone for all your help by the way

If you applied another suggested fix and it cured the problem then I
would say to leave the entry as it is.

I never applied no new post. Nobody was replying to it so I posted a new one
but nothing is fixed.

Troubleshooting shutdown problems is time consuming and challenging. There
is no "pat" answer for this situation as the cause can be from any one or a
combination of various sources.

You've already received two of the best resources on the internet to guide
you along the way.

Windows XP Shutdown/Restart Troubleshooting
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Also already referred was the user profile cleaner. Check Event Viewer for
the errors shown in the article. You can still try the tool even if you
don't find the errors as it's possible that whatever is hanging is not
being picked up by Event Viewer.

Troubleshooting profile unload issues
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837115/en-us

While in Event Viewer, look around for other errors that occur at the time
of shutdown. You may find a clue here about what is causing the problem on
your computer.

The default value is set at 20000 which represents 20,000 milliseconds
or 20 seconds. All the entry is for is to tell Windows how long to wait
for applications to shutdown and cleanup after themselves. After the
set time if the application can't shut down Windows gives you one of
these messages saying that the program isn't responding and asks you if
you want to wait or kill the process. You can set the value to 1000
(for one second) if you want, but I don't think that it will fix your 2
day shutdown problem, but nothing wrong trying it. Did you install the
User Profile Hive cleanup service (UPHClean) as you were suggested in
another post? What does the Event log record during these interminable
shutdowns?

John

John, John. You're FUNNY. SHUTDOWN -s -t 01, is a Microsoft tip's and Tweaks.
It has been out for three years now. Of course you actually have to read
Documentation instead of just giving Out LINKS all the time. The Actual
Shutdown is: Pi divided by -s -t "1,000,000,000" of a nano second! I'm
Running Eight different O/S's and have No Problems. Later> You're bubba ,Woz
