1000s of junks emails "Microsoft Network Security" .... Anyone got the same problem?

Picking through 500 messages a day to find the six or seven that are
"real" mail can be tedious. At 56K or less, the time taken to
download all that mail, with attachments, would be a major pain.

< snip >

Someone on 56K should ;

(1) Use mailwasher.

(2) Sort on the "attachments" column.

(3) Delete all email with attachments if not expecting any.

That alone IMO can hugely reduce the download time/amount for
56K users. Anything else is simply a bonus.

Regards, John.

my solution was to set up filters to reply
to spammers,

About 3 days later, my ISP killed my account because they said that *I*
had been spamming. I had sent out 4000 emails in 3 days (without seeing
any of them).

< snip >

The current situation is a good example of when NOT to use
"auto-responders". I am still curious though. If the responder was
freeware then what was it and did it work on the server or on your
own machine ?

Regards, John.

???
Use the Mailwasher filters
I filter on the To field
If the 'to' field ... does not contain ... <my email address> mark
for deleting

Be sure to remember to exclude any mailing lists that you have. They
often do not have your address in.

Add "microsoft" or "patch" or "partner" to the above and you should
reduce false positives IMO.

It was just email filters, set to auto-reply. It was on own laptop.

I was getting hundereds. I noticed they were all being sent to the email
I had setup to post to Usenet. I just deleted that email and created a
new one for posting. All of the emails ot my old address bounce now so I
don't even see them. NEVER use your REAL email address on a webpage or
in newsgroups. Either use a fake one or use an email that forwards to
your real one. That way if it startes getting SPAMmed, you can delete it.

hi all,

it is couple of days that i am getting 1000s (I mean each day arround more
than 300) junk emails almost identical "Microsoft Network Security" all
attached with an .exe file.

I am using Mailwasher freeware but it looks like it doesnt help. Does anyone
else had the same problem? Where the problem is? my ISP or what? Any
freeware to delete them from my ISP server without displaying them?

Any other solution will be appreciated.

After reading about this influx of Microsoft e-mails for the last few days by so many, I am starting
to feel left out. I haven't had a single one yet. What am I doing right!

BTW, how is it? It sure seems large for an email app.
Fairly good, in general.

A lot of the size is apparently because it has stuff taken over from
Mozilla which isn't needed for handling email. That's supposed to get
zapped; I wish they'd do that sooner.

I've been waiting for them to do it before trying it.

I'm using Eudora Lite 3.0.6 which is just fine for what I do.

Thanks, but email filters seldom send replies. That's why I was
curious as to what the program was called. Knowing the "filter" would
have been handy too.

It was <OT>The Bat</OT>. Something along the lines of
"Detect spammy header/phrase"
"Action: Reply with abuse from template x"
"Delete offending email, bypassing Trash Folder"

Easy enough in the bat. Eudora probably does it too. You can sort of do
it in Pegasus. I haven't got anything else installed at the moment to test
on, except OE & O, which don't count.
So you had to download the emails before your emailer sent out a
reply ?

Yup

Ah ! Multiple actions eh ? Good.

I was also wondering why you didn't have a "sent" folder with 4000
emails in. Put there over the last 3 days. Do you not keep "sent"
email or did you not notice ?

Or did the keep a copy of sent emails but NOT those that were the
result of "auto-responding" ?

Thanks. If the above can be done in the Bat then it shows that it is
possible. Then I/others can look for something in freeware that will
do the same.

Okay, I suspected that. Not a good idea for people with limited
download quotas.

Everything to do with my "spam counterattack" was auto-deleted. The idea
was that I wouldn't be troubled by the spam, but the spammers would. In
20/20 hindsight, this was a stupid idea on several levels:
1) I got killed as a spammer myself
2) I was contributing to the general email traffic of the net (although
slightly less so because I run a mailserver from my desktop)
3) It just told the spammers that it was a valid email address. My spam
load increased after my experiment

In the end, I logged into the webmail interfaces of my various accounts
and set up "delete from server" filters there for the worst
offenders/keyphrases which has cut down on the spam enormously. Not all
services provide filters, but they are well worth using if they do.
Thanks. If the above can be done in the Bat then it shows that it is

Good luck. I've been looking for an app to equal the Bat for years.
It's got sophisticated filter/template/actions that I've not seen
anywhere else. Eudora is sophisticated too, but that's more suited to
doing complicated things with one identity (or was when I last checked,
anyway). Many mailing-list operators swear by Eudora. But the free
version is adware, I believe.

Sylpheed-Claws has multiple account support, and can also call external
programs as actions, but setting it up would be complicated, I think.
http://sylpheed-claws.sourceforge.net/win32/

Calypso Email
http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/calypso/
Would also be a contender. It has some good filters and templates
apparently; but it runs off the IE engine *I believe (could be wrong)*
which is a minus for me. Screen shot of filters:
http://rosecitysoftware.com/img/courier_filters.gif

Fox Mail
http://fox.foxmail.com.cn/english.htm
Is an excellent app, and does some sophisticated stuff too.

All of the above are worthy appz which I wouldn't hesitate to recommend
to anybody, but don't have the toys that I already have in (and this is
important) the manner that I am used to.
Okay, I suspected that. Not a good idea for people with limited
download quotas.

True. Those people would be much better off logging into the webmail
interface and filtering from there. If available, this is a much better
way of doing things.

Incidentally, here's a recipe for a cheap, 1 email address, fake
autoresponder for information packs etc.

On your website, have a link something to the effect of:
"To get the information pack, click here:
mailto:[email protected]?subject=Send_me_the_pack
This automatically fills in the subject line of the email with a text
string of your choosing. The underscores are important because some
older clients choke if you use spaces.

Set up your email program to detect incoming emails with the subject line
of Send_me_the_pack, and set the action to reply to the sender using
either a template or (less satisfactory) an attached text file containing
the desired information. If your mail client won't do either of those
things, then it may be time to consider a change anyway.

And that's it. Easy huh? Of course, it only works when you pick up your
email, so it's not a proper autoresponder...but it can save a lot of work
if used peoperly.

Permit me to quote my brother Mike, who made the following suggestion when I
changed my e-mail address to escape the attack. The program does work, but
unfortunately I was again under attack, at the new address, after only two
days. I'm using E-Mail Remover for every mail access now, at least until the
attacks slow down.

"May I humbly suggest that you use this simple little program to
PREVIEW your email on your mail server, delete suspicious or known
problems and then go on to a happy, simplified and satisfied online
life. It's free. Works like a champ. One extra step, a few extra
minutes, but isn't security worth all that?
