How can I stop the automatic 'call home' function in Zone Alarm
4.5.530 ?

It keeps popping up a box asking permission to check for updates.
I don't want the box and I want to check for updates at a time
that suits me.

1. Configure Zone Alarm to allow updates
2. Turn off the auto update function in AVG

Post your query in a FireWall News Group !

David.......the words 'anal retentive' come to mind (vbg)........

Anything to do with preventing viruses/malware is usually quite wanted
and acceptable in this group. And ZA is certainly one of them.

Merry Xmas.....Figgs 8-))

There are plenty of FireWall News Groups. They can go there. There is NO reason to go here
unless it is specifically Trojan or worm related to dealing with blocking ports associated
to said infector. Microsoft just added one to their News Server...

news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.networking.firewall

Posts should be kept On Topic or as close as possible within the realm of the News Groups
purpose. The OP's thread bears NO relevance to the reason this News Group was created.
This is NOT the WinME News Group where the idiots post anything they want.

Dave the opinionated...

Merry Xmas to you as well Figgs....

This tells how to turn off auto updates. I did it long ago.
Bottom 2 paragraphs.
Thanks but I've done all that:

<Quote>
In the Overview panel, Preferences tab, find "Contact with Zone
Labs." Check "alert me with a pop-up before I make contact" and
"Disable check-for-update backup channel." Now you will be
notified before an update check occurs. Pressing Do not Send will
prevent the update check, pressing Send will allow the check to
go through. Disabling the check-for-update back-up channel
prevents the safety back-up where if Zone Labs cannot contact the
update server through regular methods, it will open a Web browser
to complete the check.
</quote>

But I don't even want to get the windows with the 'Do not Send'
button. Any other thoughts?

You seem to get away with it - and top-posting as well :-)

We ALL top post in the MS WinME new group.......and frankly, in all of
the MS news groups......makes sense to us. And no, I will not get into
an argument on it......I prefer top-posting and am only doing this just
for the hell of it. (and to show Bartman that "I can".......as Laura
would say)

Anyway, David just got reamed a bit in the WinME one for the same "bossy
attitude", so I was rubbing it in a bit. We are not all
'idiots'......we help people.......we don't tell them 'where to go'.
(G) Unless they are really newbie and post say, XP in the ME
groups......

Oh well......we will get him sorted out one of these days.......(VBG)

If anyone could -- it would be you !

I picked this up in the security forum at DSLReports. It works perfectly.
Back up your registry first in case you make a mistake.

Close Zone Alarm.
Open up your registry editor by going to Run and typing in regedit.
Go to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs\Zone Alarm.
In the right pane, you will see CfgMain, double click that. Use your
keyboard's arrow keys to downwards until you reach 0028. On line #6(0028),
press the right arrow key 5 times, then hit Backspace.
After you have done the step above, type 00 on your keyboard.
Then click OK.
Restart Zone Alarm.

I used the same solution that Doug posted of so now in "Check for
Updates" I see "Update checks have been set to manual"
ZoneAlarm don't approve of this method though.

Many thanks Doug - just what I was looking for :-)
