ZoneAlarm update 5...is it time now?

Mister Charlie

When the ZA upgrade came out it was pretty universally slammed as
ineffective, bad and downright dangerous to your computer (in many
cases, not all).

So it's been awhile now...does anyone know if they reviewed and repaired
any possible bugs? Is there any advantage to going ahead with this?
Does one LOSE anything by doing this?

I want to keep things current, especially security-ware. But not at the
expense of features or even my computer!

Thanks!

From what I can gather, they've fixed all the big problems in ver. 5.x .
Just going by what I've read.

On the other hand, when it comes to ZA, I am under the impression that
the actual *firewall* functioning of the program has remained virtually
unchanged since ver. 3.x (I'm using 3.7.211 at the moment), and that the
enhancements that began with the ver. 4.x series were more of the AV,
anti-spyware/malware nature. As I've already got those areas well
covered, I've not felt the need to upgrade.

Again, these are just my impressions, and I will, of course, stand
corrected.

Hold on. I just went back to the main forum I use when I have such
questions, and I'm now seeing some dissenting opinions. Seems there are
still a few bugs hanging on for dear life. Might want to wait it out a
little bit longer...

Thanks, Mark.

I think I probably will hang tight as it works just fine now, and as
you say, I have the other areas beyond the firewall covered with other
programs.

The latest released worked fine for me here. Why not try it for
yourself and see if it works for you. Things that other people report
may not affect you. Worse case is you just uninstall it and go back to
an earlier version again. Nothing lost...

iirc there was talk of some damage to the os that required an entire
reformatting, something I simply do not want to do. Even with system
restore...I'd rather know it's at least *safe* to install, even if not
particularly effective.

I keep seeing reports of unsuccessful usenet yEnc downloads associated
with ZA

Used to have a problem with True Vector, but only in Windows 2000 and XP.
Recently I discovered a workaround on ZoneLabs user forum, and decided to
try ZA again. (ZA is IMHO the best for users who are not, and do not wish
to, learn about firewall settings.)
I've now installed the last edition of ZA on a home computer with Windows
2000.
No problems this time. :-)

I haven't had a single problem with version 5 including the latest
update. ymmv.
