Hi all,

A long time ago, I had set up an internet connection sharing between my
2 PCs running on Windows XP, and it worked all right until I install
Zone Alarm 3.0.
After that, I could not share internet connection nor share files. I
uninstalled this bloody program, and still no luck. Then someone
suggested to install NetBIOS protocol, and file sharing worked again
(well, it works most of the time).

BUT there is no way to make ICS work again. More serious (and certainly
related), I tried pinging one computer from another and it does not
work. I used the addresses from the "ipconfig" command.

What could be wrong? I heard that ZA messed the network of a couple of
people.
I've been trying to solve this bug for more than 1 year... still no luck.

Re-install ZoneAlarm, then un-install it using the procedure provided
by the manufacturer. Reboot, then go to Start | Run | Msconfig |
Startup and disable any remnants of ZoneAlarm.

Hi

The free version of Zonealarm doesn't support ICS with Internet Zone
security set at High, reduce it to Medium and your network will be able to
connect to the internet.

I would suggest you go to this page http://tinyurl.com/bx1n and remove ZA
completely from your system and then reinstall ZA and follow the
instructions above for the setting on the Internet Zone.

Regards

Bill

Thanks for your advice! I removed the remaining ZA files and completely
removed this crap from my system, then I restored default security
settings and now I'm able to ping.
Furthermore, when I run Explorer from the client computer, the server
connects to the internet using the local ADSL modem. It still does not
work since the explorer tries to "detect proxy parameters" and then
"Impossible to display page". Well, it's better, but it still does not work.

Hi

Do you mean that you have 'Use a proxy' set in IE on the client? If that's
what you've got you should remove it. Is your client PC getting it's IP &
DNS 'automatically'? It should have a gateway of 192.168.0.1 defined in it,
do an 'ipconfig /all' on the client and post the results.

Hi,

I worked at bit to make it understandable and clear for you, since my
Windows version is in french.
I tried to translate the ipconfig outputs, I hope you'll understand.
I've got the french version but I think you'll prefer the rough
translation in english :)

I checked and I have disabled the "use proxy" on the client. The client
uses automatic address, and the gateway is properly configured;
Moreover, both machines are pingable from one to another (since the Zone
Alarm cleanup, thanks a million!) so I think I'm close to success.

Hi

Thanks for the translation. :-) I could have understood it in French, just.

OK first thing, unless there's an error the IP address for the client seems
wrong to me as it should be 192.168.0.2 rather than 192.168.0.241 you have
in the listing.

The thing that's causing your problem is the fact you have a DNS server
address of 172.10.12.253 on the client PC. That should also be 192.168.0.1
and is issued by ICS/DHCP when the client gets it's IP address. Can you
make sure that you are getting the DNS server address automatically, if
it's still getting that same address then set it manually to 192.168.0.1
and you should be able to get out.

Regards

Bill

thanks for everything, I finally managed to make it work, and I even
know why it works. I removed the proxy AND the DNS on the client. Thanks
I won't bother you again (well, at least with that question :))

Glad it's all working.

Take care. :-)
