The user reviews on CNET indicate the newly released V.5 of Zone Alarm is
unstable especially with XP.

I am staying with 4.5 for now.

Any other opinions.

I just upgaded to 5.0 from the previous version of Zone Alarm. I am
using Windows Me and a Linksys router with a cable connection. I think
version 5.0 is better for me than the older version. I like the user
interface and it has some new functions I also like. No errors or
problems of any kind. That is just my small opinion.

In the end I had to get rid of V5. It used to cause massive program hang
ups. As Zone alarm is the only one, I think to use the true event
manager, in the end it was easy to hone in on the problem.,once you knew
the key ! It seemed to hyjack windows settings, lost the use of fax
viewer, set all my photo stuff to only open in Roxio and loads of silly
crap like that, in the end it was leading to big freeze ups and loss of
data.

No problems now I whent to mcafee.

Not an opinion but a question...
Just wondering if anyone is experiencing problems with IE6 (winXP) after
upgrading ZA to 5?
Things like the page just hanging there after you have clicked a link from
another page and then being unable to end task?
Can one just revert back to previous version of ZA and, if so, what would be
the process?

You have to uninstall the new version and then reinstall the old
version, even then it can still be unstable with a certain combination
of open progs but more so in IE6. It actually took me hourse to track
the problem down untill I found out that the true event engine was Zone
Alarm. At first I thought it was an XP function listed in the event
logs.
It is best to do a reg clean and defrag before installing again as
the uninstall leaves bits behind, leaving you to trawl through the
system to remove them.

I used 5 for a few days but decided to downgrade to 4.5. It was causing
problems with my computer (Winxp) like hanging aka system lockups,
programs unable to connect to the internet, etc...

The page with the old version is here
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/znalm/zaReleaseHistory.html
or on the pricelessware site :)

If you want to completely remove the new version from your system,
change the uninstall shortcut by locating it in Start >Programs > Zone
Labs > uninstall Zone Alarm. Right click on it and select properties
then change the path from
"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"
to
"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean

This gets rid of everything.

Several days so far with V5 and XP. No problems so far.

Been using it for about a week on XP with no problems.

Followed earlier posted suggestions and wrote off ZA 5, reverted to previous
version.
Problems all went away.
Thanks for the tip from Teranews...worked like a charm.

I still use 2.6.362 Why should I change to a later version?

Better security. I'm not sure what your OS is but don't change to v5 in its
current state. BTW, the later versions of ZA only support Windows 98SE and
higher.

I noticed similar comments in the latest Langa newsletter:

Fred said: I tried uninstalling the new ZAP and reinstalling the
previous version, but Norton remained badly hosed by all the diddling
I'd done to it. In the end, it was faster and simpler for me to roll
my system back to the pre-change state, using ZAP 4x as a firewall,
and Norton for AV protection. Now everything works fine again.
I'm not the only one having trouble:

Hi Fred: I've used Zone Alarm for a couple of years now and
really like it. However the latest version (zap_50_590_015) has
slowed my XP system to a crawl - especially MailWasher and
Outlook Express. ---Ian Patton

Dear Fred, I will probably just be adding my note to many
others in this regard. The newest Zone Alarm Pro, 5.0 update
blew away my cable internet connection and caused my machine to
reset every time I attempted to get mail or browse the web.

..... and there are other letters too. In short, if you have a copy of ZA
4x, hang on to it. At the very least, the 5x version seems not ready for
prime time; and it may simply have become too big, too complex, and too
unwieldy for its own--- or our--- good. Fred
