Has any one compiled a list of the pros and cons of these two fire
walls?

Both are very good. But I heard recently there found a security flaw in
ZoneAlarm that affected all versions of the software. Of course, the flaw
will be corrected.

For Newbie, Zone Alarm is the easiest to configure and set up. Sygate
requires a bit more knowledge.

Personally, I prefer Kerio Personal Firewall v 2.1.5. It is fast and works
great. I tried Sygate. It ran to slow on my old PII. ZoneAlarm just did
not give me the options and flexibility I needed.

P.S. I would stay away from the later versions of Kerio. They are
bloatware.

Try them all and choose the one you like. You really can't go wrong with
any of them.

I very much agree with Rob. The link to Kerio v 2.1.5 is not easy to
find off the Kerio web page, but if you go here:

http://www.kerio.com/dwn/kpf/

you will see the version at the top of the page. Best personal firewall
I have found.

There are as mamy answers as firewalls. I keep trying them all and always
come back to Agnitum Outpost.

Outpost is another great firewall. It also ran fast on my old PII. But
unfortunately, I keep having problems. Outpost would crash more often than
I could live with. I tried re-installing but that did not solve the
problem.

If you can get Oupost to work on your PC, then by all means use it. It
offers some features not offered in other firewalls.

Keri fits the bill for me. For web filtering and pop up blocking I use
Proxomitron along side Kerio. The combo works perfectly.

Tried most of these and Kerio is the free one I preferred. Currently using
Norton (not free) but all of these I found some limitations in setting rules.

I'd like to be able to set up rules and then apply applications to use these
rules and to override rules at individual level.

eg
IP addresses for DNS servers
allow all to access DNS service on that range.

IP addresses for POP servers
Allow POP to these
IP addresses for SMTP servers
Allow SMTP to these
ie define what mail access you want from the PC

allow apps to these groups. New mail apps just get added to these groups.
apps that have news client can just also add the news rules.

The idea being that I can cut the number of rules down.

Incidently there is a glaring weakness in Norton (other than tooleaky) in
that you can protect the settings with a password but you don't need that
password to permit a new program to access the net.

Which one of the PDF's and CHM's go with that trimmed down version located
on the same page.
