Thanks very much Paul. I followed the procedure at the link you provided and
it fixed the problem - which was:
Description of problem:
The company I bought a Windows Vista PC from had installed ZIPGenius.
I tried to open an old ZIP file created by either Windows XP Explorer (“Send
To Zip Fileâ€) or WinZip (I think) under Windows XP but ZIPGenius could not
open it. I wanted to use the native, standard ZIP facility in Windows Vista
Explorer but there was no reference to it in the File Association when I
attempted to change the File Association. So I uninstalled ZIPGenius and
tried to open a ZIP file but there was no program found on the local hard
drive and Explorer did not recognize it. I could CREATE a ZIP file using
Explorer “Send To†but could not open it after it was created.

Applied the fix Paul mentioned to the registry. It worked!
I copied an .xls spreadsheet file “X†to “X1â€.
Then I right clicked “Send To “Compressed (zipped) folderâ€â€
The file/folder was created.
I double-clicked on it and it opened the spreadsheet (which it didn’t do
before (see above)).
It also was able to open the old ZIP file referred to above.
