I have been trying to open 2 files I have downloaded. They are updated
firmware for my VOIP phone, and come in as .GZ and .DS [voip.GZ and
voip.DS.]. I should be able to extract them by right clicking and clicking on
"Extract", except that Extract does not show in the dialogue box. OR I should
be able to simply double click on each file, but that doesn't work either. I
just get the dialogue box telling me that "Windows cannot open the file" and
asking if I want to look on the web. This links me to a whole lot of
commercial applications, a lot of which seem to want to alter my Registry.
I've tried to open the file in my new Sony Vaio laptop which runs Vista, but
the same thing occurs. Grateful for any advice.

You posted this question in the wrong newsgroup/forum. This group is dedicated
to development of .NET applications. Now on how to extract files.

Though, you're lucky, here's some advice: download 7zip from www.7zip.org.
It's free and it will allow you to unpack the file you downloaded.

I wonder though, shouldn't you just put these files on your VOIPPhone and
start some kind of upgrade procedure? It would surprise me if there's anything
of use in these files.

Sorry it was in the wrong spot. So many places you can start searching these
days, and I thought I was in another forum. Tried to download 7-zip.org, but
it said it would take 1hr 19m. I'm afraid I haven't the patience. Another
source wanted me to SMS message to somewhere....... There has to be a simpler
way, and anyway I can't understand why neither my PC nor my laptop with Vista
cannot automatically open the 2 files. Thanks anyway, I'll hunt elswhere.

For what its worth, .gz files are not zip archives, but are GZip files.
