Text, allows you to hold all the various country type zip codes, some of
which contain alpha characters, as well as useful things like "Unknown"
or "N/A".

I would use a text field:

(1) It allows the entry of leading zeroes, which some zip codes have.

(2) It allows the entry of Zip+4 (55555-0001) zip codes.
