I am attempting to import an Excel 2000 worksheet into Access 2000 as a
table. The field for Zip Code is just not importing correctly. Some zips
are 5-digit, others are 9-digit. I have changed their format in Excel to
text to no avail; I still get errors on those lines and no data imports.
The import wizard is grayed out for the format of the cell and says
"double" - not allowing me to change the import format to text. Help! How
do I import this data?

Are you importing into an existing table? What is the format of the
existing field?

No, I am importing into a NEW table. The format of the zip code field in
Excel has been changed to text. However, the 5-digits import OK but the
9-digits are left blank in Access. Should I setup a blank table and import
into it? This has more than 20 fields.

It's my understanding, and I sure could be wrong, that Access looks at
the first few rows to figure out what kind of data is in a given
field. So possibly only the first few have the 5 digit zip code?

One possibility would be to "seed" the first row in Excel with
nonsense data forcing Access to create the correct field type.

BRILLIANT!!!!! I love the simplicity. It appears to have worked just fine.
Thank you so much for the suggestion.
