Now that you are testing Vista, what are your opinions, thus far, of
it? Many bugs? Needs to go a long way before release? Stuff like that.

Thanks,
Caesar

From testing Windows Vista since beta 2 to RC1, I have to say it has come a long way. I enjoy the overall performance increase. I have not had any major issues so far with RC1 excluding printer driver issues. I have installed RC1 on 3 different systems with no install problems. Here are a few things I like about Vista.
a.. Graphical view (Aero effect)
b.. Parental Controls (great for families with children)
c.. Built in search (Easy to locate files)
d.. Sidebar (Improved in RC1, I can't wait to see what people create when Vista is RTM)
e.. Windows Meeting Space (Great for business use)
f.. UAC (It has been improved a lot since beta 2. There is a little more fine tuning that needs to be done, but I think this was a good idea.)
I am sure there are people out there that may disagree with this, but this is just my opinion.

Windows Vista RC1 Build 5600

Overall, I think I like it. The only program problem I have run into so far
is that I can't get ANY DVD Copy/Rip program to work with it. I have RC1 on
my laptop and want to rip some episodes off of purchased DVD tv shows and
save them there and every program I have tried gets error messages.

I think Pre-RC1 was better than RC1. I have seen major improvements in every
build since Beta 2, but RC1 is horrible. It was telling me that I should run
the memory diagnostic, and when I ran it it said there were hardware issues
with the memory but I ran MemTest86 and it passed the memory with flying
colors. My reliabilty index after 2 weeks of using it was a 4.88 after using
Build 5472 for a month my reliability index was at least an 8. Then it would
not even boot so I tried to reinstall and the DVD wouldn't boot. It would
freeze after I clicked on Install Now. It's not ready and hopefully the next
build that they put out before RTM is a lot better. I have gone back to XP
until they release a new build.

Very pleased to be honest, in fact I think its running much better on my
system than some people on here make out. Obviously with millions of
different system configurations people have across the world there are bound
to be some probs.

Some tweaks needed here and there but v. cool so far.

As for the DVD burning, try Roxio Easy CD/DVD programs.

cheers,

Generally -- not ready for release, but overall, very good.

It's close.

Close? I don't think so...

Still lots of obvious bugs, incomplete features, and inconsistent
windows across Vista. I can see the final product will need a lot of
regular updates and I seriously doubt all the obvious bugs will be
fixed prior to release.

Heck, they haven't fixed XP yet, nevermind Vista.

For instance, Windows Explorer in XP after all the updates STILL
doesn't update and refresh properly. In XP if you copy and paste from
one folder to another, the folder tree would not always refresh. This
still has not been addressed. That's just one of several obvious "in
your face" issues that have never been fixed.

Another is the unused folder close out. You click on a folder to open
it. The last folder used should close and maintain a concise tree, but
instead it starts leaving everything open and you have to close them
behind you. If not you have to start scrolling like mad to get back
and forth.

Oddly enough they have a selective option in IE, but not Explorer.

And who was the dummy that came up with the new start button that is
too big for the taskbar? It gets partially covered up by other windows
and the edge of the screen at the bottom. That's just sloppy.

And why did they go back to the scrolling programs menu? For people
like me who install lots of programs, it's a pain in the ass. I much
preferred the cascading menu which was faster and easier to get to a
program. At least give us the option to choose scrolling or cascading.

Vista is being promoted as connected, clear, and confident.

But I think it'll just end up being XP + some goodies instead of a new
version. But hey, as long as Microsoft can make another few billion
dollars, who cares about bugs and non working features, right?

It's definitely not ready for RTM. Not until more Vista
driver-framework drivers are written. RC1 definitely needs to be
cleaned up a great deal. Although it is much better than Beta 2, it
is still not up to final release.

I personally believe there needs to be an RC2 release before it goes
"Gold".

I want to be able to install and use Vista on my Apple Intel PC just
as easily as I am able to install and use XP on it at the present
time.

Well, the subject is OPINIONS. Personally, I'm having very few
issues with it.

That's nice.

But you asked for opinions, so I gave it.

Now you're saying you didn't like my opinion?

Hey, while I'm at it...the weather gadget on the sidebar doesn't
update often enough. It's 2109 hours here (Toronto), it's very dark
and cloudy outside, but the gadget still says it's sunny and clear.

:-(

Also Windows Explorer insists on showing hidden files and folders
after I tell it not to show them. The recycle bin folder is definitely
a system folder, and definitely should follow the rules...but there it
is, sitting right at the top of the folder tree for no reason at all.

I could go on and on...but as long as YOU'RE happy and have "very few
issues", I guess it doesn't matter if it works right or not. Come to
think of it...isn't that Microsofts secret corporate motto?

"Who cares if it works...as long as it sells." - Bill Gates (November
20 1985)

:-)

Why where you asking again...?

Oh, well...nevermind then.

:-/

I guess I'm still getting used to this reader.

What did you think of my rant?

I got some more if you're interested.

:-)

I can't believe MS considers this a RC. I have no driver issues, and a
system rating of 3.5. I have had some type of issue with every part of
Vista I've used.

I upgraded to MSDOS 2.1 from PCDOS and have owned and used every major MS OS
release since then. I'm seriously considering going with an open source OS
in the future.

Overall Vista rating = Icky.
