I have heard that windows vista will slow down a computer, some things
would have to be changed(graphics card), and it takes a lot of power
to run vista. Now I have heard this from a computer technician, and a
salesperson that works where they sell windows vista. So I thought I
would ask this group theiropinion on this, since we have some very
knowledgeab
le people here.

Think of it in simple terms.
Maybe compare it to something else.

Pretend you bought a computer back in 1998 - brand new with Windows 98
installed on it.

At that time it was a nice system. Good processor - decent speed... And it
ran Windows 98 well. You even got a 40GB hard disk drive thinking you'd
never use all that space. You had 128MB memory - wow! You even had a CD-RW
drive! 8X!

In 2001/2002 - you purchased Windows XP. You installed it as an upgrade on
your 1998 computer. What do you think happened?

Moral: Yeah - you could need more horsepower than your current computer has
to run Windows Vista at its full potential.

Facts:
Windows Vista does require more memory/hard disk space/overall system power
and space than previous Microsoft OSes. Of course - there are few OSes
where that couldn't be said.

Windows Vista, by itself - would run okay with 1GB memory. When you start
adding other applications, well - you use more and more of that memory that
was happily being used by JUST Windows Vista. I always recommended between
512MB and 1GB (although more is better) for Windows XP. I recommend between
1GB and 2GB (although more is better) for Windows Vista. Where your needs
lie depends on what you will be using the computer for.

Computing may be a nightmare for some, but easy for others. Many people
will tell you to use *nix, others will tell you to use OS X, others will
tell you that Windows (XP/Vista) is the way to go... There may even be those
happy with Windows 9x/2000... Some sing the praises of DOS 6.x and before.
Depends on needs/wants.

The truth is - you can get all the opinions you want - until you try
something and form your own opinion - all the rest is hot air/written text.

James, I am sure that WinVista likes the latest computer technology, that
being said I installed it on my five year old system
with a 1.4G Processor, 1/2G Ram and an old GeForce3 Video Card. It works
fine except my NIC does not have a
Vista Driver yet.

The question you should be asking yourself is...
1.What does XP not do for you that Vista does
2. Do you really need #1

You're being very generous there Shenan <g> I bought my first one in 1998
and that ran Windows 98,it was a 233 MMX, it had 32 MB RAM and a 2.1 GB
hard drive and that was big, I only got a CD Rom drive though :-( a
couple of months later I could have bought one with a 3.4 GB drive <g>

Go onto a few vista newsgroups and get advice there. It will give you some
idea of the pitfalls.

That depends entirely on the computer. If you have an older computer without
hardware adequate for Vista, yes Vista will very likely run more slowly that
whatever operating system is running now.

However, if you have a modern computer with adequate hardware, Vista will
run just fine on it. I've seen no slowdown on my computer with Vista here.

Also note that exactly the same has been true of *every* new version of
Windows (and many new versions of other software). Newer versions come with
improvements and new features, and it takes better hardware to run them. So
Windows 95 needed more hardware than 95, 98, needed more than 95, 2000 more
than 98, etc.

some things

Again, that depends on what you start with. I didn't change any hardware on
my system when I upgraded to Vista.

and it takes a lot of power
to run vista.

Power? You mean electrical power? How much electrical power is required is a
function of the hardware, not the software.

If by "a salesperson that works where they sell windows vista," you mean
someone in a branch of one of the big nationwide chains like CompUSA,
Circuit City, or Best Buy, these are the least reliable source of any
computer information at all. Most of these people are chosen, not for their
computer skills, but for their willingness to accept something close to
minimum wage. Most people with real skills are capable of getting much
better jobs than selling in such stores. That of course doesn't mean that no
employee of such a store knows anything, but it certainly means that few of
them do.

Believe my views on Vista or not, as you choose, but whatever you do, don't
believe such people.

I did a few test installs on some lower-end p4's running XP.
Though Vista ran about the same as XP...most of the video features that
worked fine on XP
did not work at all with Vista. The video cards I have do not cut it.

My advice would be to stick with XP unless you have some very good
hardware...
but frist ask yourself:

What will Vista give me that XP does not ?

My guess is the answer will be to simply stick with XP

And quite correctly so, as it's turned out. :)

Thanks to everyone who replied. I`ve thought about Vista, but I`m
satisfied with XP, my computer runs fast on XP, and
I wouldn`t want to slow it down. My system is 1.6 GHz processor speed,
1 GB memory and 40 GB hard drive.

I tested Vista from it's beginnings as Longhorn right through to it's final
release as Vista. I don't have it running on any of my systems as XP gives
me all I need.

This is very good advice. Alternately, go to M$'s web site and load the
Vista Upgrade Advisor. It will run and give you a "Rating" for your
computer, and then suggest what you will need to change to make Vista run
at Full Bore (My immediate guess would be RAM and Video card, unless
you've gott Bleeding Edge technology already...)

Also, it will query your apps and then tell you what software will need
upgrading. You can run M$ Office 2000 and 2003 and up on Vista, but a LOT
of my apps were deemed to be incompatible with Vista. Sine I had a good
video card and over a Gig or RAM, that was OK, but it was going to cost
about $600 to upgrade my software!!! Add that to the cost of Vista, and
you're approaching $1000!!!

In my case? Not worth it. Left XP alone.

Just an update. I was able to use the WinXP drivers for both my D-Link
NIC and my HighPoint Raid Controller. So now
I can access the net and use a Raid Controller channel for my hard drive.
WinVista does load much slower than XP. Even
on a computer with 1G of memory and using a AMD 64 dual processor it
seems to run slower than XP. I like Vista but I
will be keeping my XP Pro for awhile.

Stay with XP for one... Vista = VisTrash

What did you do before there was Vista to trash? Oh, never mind, I know;
you trashed XP.

Nope - i waited until all wizards like yourself said it was pretty
good, then tried it myself... This time i got vista before i listened
to all the wizards but it's not as good as XP...
