Hi,

Vista RTM. New install.

I become a little bit crazy when trying to do "simple things" !
I have administrator rigths ans I disabled UAC directly after finishing
installing Vista.

Everything is installing perfectly ... right now ;-)

I just want to reinstall some data I backed-up.
So I try to paste in directory
Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles\XXXX\
.... and I receive "You need permission to perform this action !!!!".
I check "security" for the folder and I have the rights !
I can paste the files in a other directory (let's say Microsoft instead of
Mozilla) without any problems ?!?
I have the problem with some applications ...

Many thanks for help ... as I don't understand what's happening ?

Best regards

Pierre

you are another stupid user disabled the UAC. Because if you disable the
UAC, you loose the file and the registry virtualization and so many
applications will stop to work. Enable the UAC and stop complain about it!

Mmmmhhh !
You are so intelligent that other people are stupid.
As you're so intelligent I can't find words you can understand.
Read again my message and try to be as stupid as me (...us...) so you can
understand.

Was this file created using XP or other OS.

I have tried recreating this and it didn't happen, the only time in beta I
ever got access denied or permission messages was trying to access XP files.

mik doesn't get frustrated doing simple tasks. All mail clients I know of
remember your user/password so he doesn't need to type it everytime he
critizises someone for disabling UAC. Perhaps they should, don't you think
mik? after all you're posting the message to the world, don't you think it
deserves careful concideration before posting? a more secure mail client
would prompt for the users password before sending I think, don't you?

Haaaaa ... usefull reply :-)
No the file I try to access (as I explain) was created during fresh
installation of Vista RTM.
After I installed Firefox, I was unable to copy back (a file coming from a
backup of same program installed in Vista RC1) a file ("bookmark.html") to
retrieve my bookmarks.
When I try to copy the file I receive "Youd don't have the permission ...".
I can copy the same file in other directories under "USERS" (for instance
"Thunderbird/profiles") without any problem.
Now that I thought about these permissions problem, It is may be because the
programs are not compatible with vista and that some thinks are not done
correctly ... not microsoft fault ... ?
I have same problem "access denied" when trying to install some new
application.
Again ... may be not compatible with Vista.
Can we have an advice from someone from MVP ?

Last, I disable UAC because it seems that program giving problem during
installation are installing without UAC enabled ...
But, for others, UAC give a way to install the program correctly.

Hope that other person will continue to give their advice.

Waiting to hear from you guys !!

Thanks

Pierre

Hi PierreDa,
So I try to paste in directory
Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles\XXXX\
... and I receive "You need permission to perform this action !!!!".

I don't understand why this would happen. It's your own profile? I don't
think it's Mozilla related, they don't mess with permissions.

Are you saying you are NOT able to paste ANY file into this folder, or
just the bookmarks.htm file?

Are you saying it fails with UAC both on, and off?

Are you able to paste files into each of thses?

Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local
Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla
Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\
Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles

HI,
I don't understand why this would happen. It's your own profile?
YES

Are you saying it fails with UAC both on, and off?
YES

Are you able to paste files into each of thses?

Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local
Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla
Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\
Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles

NO ... "You need permission to perform this action" !!
(and UAC ask me to confirm to give administrator privileges to do it ...)

Regards

Pierre

Hello,

Could you run the following command-line from an elevated command prompt and
paste the output into the newsgroups:

icacls X:\Users\Me.domainName\AppData\Local\Mozilla

Hello,

Here it is ...Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]

and know I'm waiting for the "OOooohhh YEeeesss" :-) :-)

The permissions look good - they give you, administrators, and the system
full control over the folder and any subfolder and files that are created
inside the folder.

Maybe the problem is with the SOURCE files and not the destination? Have you
tried copying a file from the desktop to this location?

As you said, when I check the permission settings, I have full rights on
everything.

Yes, I have try to copy a file from an other directory and paste it ... same
message.
Strange ...
An other example is if I try to install "flash player".
The program decompress the files he need and when he begin to install the
installer said that he cannot find some files from the directory where he has
decompress everything !!

Again, I can "paste" in all the directories "USERS" but not his one (I
haven't try all ...).

regards

Thanks

Pierre

Hi PierreDa,
NO ... "You need permission to perform this action" !!

Are you saying you are unable to paste ANY file into EACH of the folders
above? Did you try all the folders I listed?

I'm a bit confused about the \Me.domainName\ part of the path? Is this
the normal naming convention in Vista, are you on a domain? I ask
because the only time you would end up with folders of that name under
Win2k was if something had gone wrong with the loading of the profile.
Usually the profile would be called something like

\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Mozilla

Hi,

YES !

NO ! "You need permission ...". UAC is enabled and I answer "Yes" when
asking to continue ans give "administrator privileges" ...

NO ! Idem

NO ! Idem
Are you saying you are unable to paste ANY file
I create a new file to test again.

See above for answers

Yes I'm on a domain, and I don"t know if it is the "normal naming" ... I
guess Yes !
Local profile is for instance "Users\MyUserName" and domain profile
"Users\MyUserName.DomainName".
I had always that in Vista.

Thanks

If you have anti-virus software, try disabling/uninstalling it.

To whom are you addressing this to ? This is a perfect example of
websites pulling posts from the MS newsgroups and then spitting them
back with absolutely nothing to contribute.
It would be *wonderful* if MS stopped allowing these web-based forums
from doing so.

Did the above fix the issue with your car ?
