almost all the options in word 2003 are grayed out! This is a joke. I can't
do anything I want to do. I want to use my personal pictures as backgrounds.
Oh well, guess I won't be buying this program!

If they are greyed out, you have a trial version that has time expired or a
non-activated version that has exceeded its 50 uses.

Terry's probably right on with Trial/Unactivated assessment, but based on
the tone of the statements I thought it might be worth pointing out that a
document must be *open* for the majority of Word's features to be available,
even in a full-fledged, properly activated copy of the program.

document must be *open* for the majority of Word's features to be
available,
and not protected for many of the same features to be available.
